The Leopard Seal.
These guys are pretty incredible animals, and at times a little intimidating to be around. They are large, up to 11.5’ (3.5m long) weighing upwards of 1300lbs (600kg) they are quick and agile in the water and have a set of teeth any vampire would be envious of. They are an apex predator, and while most human interaction with them has been positive, as with any predator, mishaps can happen. You have to have full respect for these fellas just as you would being around any other apex predator. I wouldn’t recommend jumping into the Southern Ocean in your finest tuxedo as one of their favourite items on their menu are penguins.
These are an animal that captivate me when I’m around them, There’s something that just seems so prehistoric about them, with the shape of their body and head they almost remind me of a giant lizard or sea serpent. And when you catch their attention, one can’t help be a little intimidated by their glance. Especially once you’ve seen what they can do to a penguin! None the less, (and even though they eat cute little penguins) they are a fascinating animal to have to spend some time with and observe and photograph.
