As per our usual outing, my wife and I went for a Sunday Brunch before the weekly grocery shopping. We have been told since we are “Honorary Cajuns” that Cajun Steamer should be on our list. When we arrived, we were greeted with a “Hot Boiled Crawfish Season Soon” sign that left me a little weak in the knees. Also, to my delight the menu sports Oysters on the Half Shell, Char-grilled Oyster, and Oysters Rockefeller. This oyster dish trio is hard to find outside the gulf coast area. I went for a half dozen Oysters Rockefeller while I perused the menu. I went with the Blue Crab Benedict while my wife went with the Creole Scramble. As our oysters arrived, I splashed some lemon and Tabasco on them and went to town. I want to preface this by saying that I hold my Cajun/Creole food to a very high standard due to my many years spent in Louisiana. The Oysters Rockefeller were good, but not the best I have ever had. They just didn’t have the crisp to the top that I am use too. Again, they were not bad, just not my favorite. As my Crab Benedict arrived my spirits were quickly raised. A biscuit with creole sauce and a wonderful crab cake placed on top with a perfectly poached egg. As you cut into the egg and crunchy crab cake the yolk trickles down to the biscuit and creole sauce for an explosion of tastes and textures with just a small hint of that cayenne pepper that is so traditional to Cajun food. I didn’t even want to share any bit with my wife. Her Creole Scramble was a nice breakfast skillet type dish with red potatoes, scramble eggs, andouille sausage, cheese, and creole sauce. The andouille added the spice and flavor this dish needed. I often find this type of dish bland, but this was an exception.
At $55 for two teas, an appetizer, two entrees, and tip, this is on the high side for Brunch. However, I look forward to eventually trying the boiled shrimp, crawfish, boudin, red beans, and gumbo. These are dishes that made me fall in love with Cajun cuisine.
