The Battle of Zama
#onthisday , in 202 A.D., the Battle of Zama was fought between the Roman army, led by Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus and the Carthaginian Army, led by Hannibal.
After have lost many battles, and suffering enormous losses, the Roman finally defeated Hannibal in Italy, transferring the war to Africa.
The Carthaginian Army was defeated many times on the battlefield, until the Romans arrived near Siliana, in the Zama Regia, where they met the last Carthaginian big army, under the command of the great general Hannibal.
How the Romans won the battle?
They didn't won because of advanced weapons, nor they won because of their courage. They won using a new tactic.
Scipio's troops did not mass together to oppose the elephants, but instead blew their horns loudly, opened their ranks to let the elephants charge through, and pelted the elephants with missiles, confusing and killing them. His main force then routed the enemy's infantry, assisted by the Numidian cavalry who had pursued the Carthaginian cavalry off the field and returned to attack the infantry force.
This battle ended the Second Punic War, with the valiant defeat of Carthage.
The battle of Zama is considered one of the most important strategic victories in the whole Roman history.~Erwin
