About a week ago I came across a video on YouTube talking about the 16 personality types in different situations. I found them hilariously accurate, so I continued to watch them as new ones popped up in my recommended feed over the course of the past week- I found they always gave me a good laugh and helped lift my spirits after a long day. Last night, as I scrolled through my feed, a video jumped out at me called “What your anxiety is trying to tell you.” by a similar YouTuber. My heart sunk and I immediately clicked on it thinking ‘yes please give me an answer for things that cause me anxiety’- but little did I know, what I was about to hear would hit home hard for me.
In the last two minutes of his video he stated: “When there’s a direction that you think about that you could go down and you feel anxious, it’s your body trying to tell you there’s something there that you don’t want to face. It might just be that you don’t want to face the unknown, you don’t want to have a change in the status quo. But it could also be that there’s a truth there that you have been ignoring, you don’t want to see it. The anxiety is trying to help you not lie to yourself anymore. When you are feeling anxious in some way perhaps you are lying to yourself. You are telling yourself there is no problem and you don’t need to face it, or the action doesn’t need to be taken right now. Now on the positive side, once you start to go towards the anxiety, I found that always, it goes away. It feels like it’s gonna get worse, and maybe at first it does as you take that step into the unknown, but the thing is, as you go into the unknown, it becomes the known- and there is much less anxiety surrounding it. When you change the status quo there’s always going to be discomfort, when you make changes, you make hard decisions there’s always discomfort. When you allow yourself to see truths that you didn’t want to see ‘cause they were inconvenient, it may bring up other issues, but the anxiety is not going to get worse because suddenly you faced it. Think about it - what is it that I’m afraid to face? What is the thing that I’m not going through with? .
