Why running alone won’t get you into the shape you are looking for 👇🏼
So you want to get back into the shape you were in when you played sports. There’s nothing actually *wrong* with where you’re currently at, but you just want to feel “better.”
YESSSS girl, do it! 👏🏼
Before we continue, I just want to let you know that there is no shame in wanting to better yourself. Regardless of what anybody else thinks. Your goals are not stupid.
Ok moving on..
So you want to get back “in shape” but you’re not really sure what to do, so you are going to start running every day again.
I love your enthusiasm, but this isn’t going to work. Here’s why:
🙅🏼♀️ Although running is great, it is purely *aerobic* exercise. Meaning it’s cardio. Great for your heart, pretty worthless for building muscle.
🙅🏼♀️ Aerobic exercise (cardio) only burns calories WHILE you are doing the exercise.
🙅🏼♀️ Running every day or even almost every day is going to lead to injury, especially if you haven’t been running consistently in a while. And if you’re injured, you can’t exercise at all.
So what should you do instead?
🌟 Resistance training + cardio (if desired). 🌟
Benefits of resistance training (lifting weights or bodyweight exercises):
👍🏼 You are actually working your muscles in a productive way which helps strengthen them.
👍🏼 You burn calories not only while you’re lifting, but for ~24 hours AFTERWARD as well.
👍🏼 You will be working all of your muscle groups, therefore have a decreased chance of an overuse injury.
My suggested split for getting back into exercise is 3 days of full body strength workouts + 1-2 days of cardio (running, walking, biking, whatever you like) IF DESIRED!
