Ruspoli's Turaco - Genale River Valley, Ethiopia
Ethiopia's most sought after endemic species, confined to a small stretch of dry forest in the south of the country. A bird with a fascinating story. It was discovered in 1892/1893 by the Italian prince Ruspoli, who also collected a sample of the bird. Sadly, the prince was trampled to death by an elephant shortly thereafter (justice?? 😉). But the sample made its way to Europe where it was examined and described by Salvadori, who named the species in honour of the prince. But because of the prince's death, the location where he collected the sample remained a mystery, and it took more than 50 years before the species was rediscovered. To this day, very little is known about the biology of this species, which is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN red list.
