Reese and I had a great day together yesterday. This is significant to me because this is the child that tests me the most. Since she was three years old, she has had an amazing ability to push me to rage, almost until I think my head is going to explode. It’s the incredible stubbornness, it’s the attitude, it’s the way she treats little brother most of the time. And I am trying so hard to raise a kind, respectful, loving person who is a leader and confident in herself, and knows to look for the good in others. Shit this is hard! And I worry that our relationship won’t be strong enough for her to come to me when the really hard years get here. So despite her best efforts to get out of it, I forced mandatory QT time with me. We went on run/bike ride, met up with some of the running group for a quick coffee afterwards, went out to breakfast, and then did a little Halloween shopping. I had no idea it would turn out so well after the resistance she gave about going. I don’t share a lot about the personal aspects of my life. You get mostly fitness, running, and entrepreneurship from me. But this, this is WHY I RUN! Running is a lot of things for me, but it is most definitely my time to clear my head, and keep control over my emotions and energy. And yes, running makes me a nicer mom. #morethanaworkout #everydayathlete #mommingishard

The by product of consistency is results. When discussing goals with clients I will always try to steer them away from having an aesthetic goal alone and I will try to encourage them to have a performance goal to coincide. By doing this the emphasis of training, nutrition and recovery is less superficial (sorry but it is) and makes each week that more interesting to monitor.

As I’ve mentioned numerous times training for me is about performance and having fun. I place very little emphasis on physique goals these days and I’m so much happier and healthier for it. Yep I said it...by my not focusing on what I look like I’m having fun, I’m eating well (sensibly 80/20 rule!), I’m challenging myself, I’m getting in at least 12,000 steps a day and lifting weights 3-5 times a week. Because this is achievable for me, I am able to be consistent week in week out and that is what gets results! 👌🏼

“We do the hard things because the hard things are worth doing.” For those of you wondering how the race went, I think these pictures show that it was good. I will also tell you it was hard.
I’m not happy with the time and I’m not happy with how hard it felt for me. We knew going into this that training wasn’t where it needed to be. All the same our training runs were my own personal bests, and for the most part a good pace. On our last training run we showed ourselves that we could perform better than we expected.
At the end of the day on our last training run I injured my foot; I made a choice to run through the injury for our half. Race day we were snowed on in -2 weather and both feeling (pun intended) under the weather.
I think that my lack of satisfaction with the quality of this race despite that we succeeded our goal to complete the race, and that it was still faster than my half last year; speaks to the unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves. And my own personal complex that I am never good enough. It’s a unique sense of awareness to be both inside looking out and on the outside looking in; recognizing that I’m not happy and reminding myself that there’s a lot to be happy about.
But when I look at these pictures, I can’t fake smiles that genuine (the puppies did help). It was a good time all around and I look forward to crushing that goal with @cassarahmm once and for all next year at the SeaWheeze. “Can’t” is not an option. 💪🏼 Finally, if you’re still reading- you are one of my many thank you’s. To my running buddy:
You inspired me to start and show me what I’m capable of. Thank you for enjoying our time as much as I do and sharing the podium with me.

On the advantages and origins of NASAL BREATHING. In JAWS @stanford Professor Paul Erlich and Sandra Kahn (also of @ucsf ) describe the health benefits of nasal breathing, chewing tough foods thoroughly and the detrimental effects of excessive soft food intake, mouth breathing, etc. And they appropriately credit Catlin’s 1861 work “Shut Your Mouth” which emphasized much of the same. While a lot of the running community were taking part in various half marathons and other runs of varied distances, I joined the Barn Fitness lot at Whole Hog Races in Suffolk. A nice 5 mile OCR, filled with a lot of water, mud, trail and a nice smattering of obstacles. Spending time with @alc_pt @devonfrosty @suecurtis3366 and @mogly82 was the icing on the cake. Big thank you to @mogly82 for letting me stay the night and spent the evening with her family, and for the cat who slept next to my head all night.
I also bought another notebook to jot down memory notes on these races so that I can actually write blog posts about then!
This was the last race that I wore my @inov_8's at, which survived by the grace of duct tape, but was left in pieces by the end.
