Common questions I get is how much weight? How many reps? How many sets? Which all are important questions when it comes to variation and progression. However I think the most under- appreciated variable is: execution. It boggles me how we can spend hours dissecting the core lifts, but breeze through the accessory exercises.
How you execute an exercise can improve safety, joint health, recruitment of the right muscles, and ability to maintain constant tension throughout the range of motion. Which are all important for targeted muscle growth and improve transfer to the main lifts.
Here are two different ways I perform the Bulgarian Split Squat. 1st way was with a slight torso lean with a focus of pushing the front foot down, where I felt majority of the tension in my glutes and hamstrings. 2nd was with a more upright torso with the load distributed farther back and pushing the front foot down and forward, which change the tension to my quadriceps (which was the goal) Same movement slight change in execution.
