Last week I said goodbye to a dear friend, Per Arne Persson.
Per Arne was celebrating his sixth birthday, playing fútbol by his family’s coastal home in Beddingestrand, Sweden when he spotted the refugee boat that my grandmother was on off in the distance. He didn’t know who was on the boat or why it was there but it was such an unusual sight that he ran inside to tell his father.
This small act saved Hana’s life along with 17 other Danish refugees running from the Nazis.
Thank you Per Arne for not just your small act of kindness in 1943, but for caring about this history, for preserving it in your home and passing it down to your children and grandchildren.
In loving memory. October 9, 1943 - August 24, 2018.
