23 y/o PVWFR & 15 y/o 2001 VW Rye
I’m not sure you’re ready for this. I know that I wasn’t.
My very best of friends, Jim Wolfe, had me over earlier this week. We decided to drink only rye’s on this evening.
We started with a baby Saz, slid into a Whistlepig 10 year, eased on into a Whistlepig Carothers/Podcask 11 yr. pick. We really enjoyed the WP 11yr pick so we had another...
Jim stepped out of the room and returned with the much fabled, one off private barrel pick of the Red Top Rye 2001 15 year old Van Winkle liquid. He handed me a fresh glencairn and deep poured me a pour of the Red Top.
Brothers and sisters let me tell you, I nosed that juice for a good 5 minutes before I dared to taste it. The nose was, in a word, incredible.
This rye is without a doubt the best whiskey I have EVER had....did I say ever? youbetcha!
So smooth, butterscotch, slight pepper and a finish to die for with ever so slight citrus notes hanging around for soooo long!
So what does a guy do to show off?
He disappears again only to return with a 23 year old #pvwfr23 and another glencairn!
Folks at home, it’s no secret that I’m not s big fan of the over hyped Van Winkle products but I can tell you that I do appreciate a good bourbon and 23 year old pappy is a great one but it was way out of its league compared to this Van Winkle private barrel pick. #notevenclose
I’m grateful or my friends incredible generosity and appreciation of ultra rare whiskeys. He does it right. He could have sold both of these for many several thousands of dollars but that’s not the cut on his jib. He’s a sipper!
