Slashing some oats!
This paddock was our kales, chards, beets and fennel two summers ago. After an intensive season of vegetables we sow oats and legumes as cover crops
They protect the soil from erosion and crusting, control weeds and disease, generally maintain organic matter, and in the case of legumes fix nitrogen. These oats are about to go to seed so we’re cutting the tops off and letting them grow again. Next time around we’ll turn them into the soil as a green manure
Soil is life! Some real organic farming for you!
