This play is going to be amazing. @_psalmsofdavid is one of the best poets I know and I know that his writing ability will transform this play into something magical. Definitely check it out if you’re in the Orlando area. ・・・
Two years ago, Kelsey Jay (@kel_cj cj) assembled a group that included Ike Acholonu (@exit1010 ), Raleigh (@raleigh_the_titan ), Marklyne Joachim, and me, to write a play about the the realities, known and unknown, of being Black in America from the millennial perspective; during an era where our pain is insensitively broadcast for public consumption and we’re expected to ignore it, “secure the bag,” and disassociate it from ourselves. In parallel, this same era has also provided opportunities for us to be agents of our own healing that our post-racial raising tried to snatch from us. The notion that we‘re in control of our own healing is what unquestionably captured us.
We met every weekend for the better part of a year to create this story and we didn’t want to leave anything out. So, naturally there were passionate disagreements, there were tears, there were long, mutually understood silences about the subject matter, but there was also equally passionate laughter, reconciliation and harmony, reminiscing, and most meetings went well past midnight. I didn’t expect to emotionally and mentally grow the way I did. We gathered and created our own healing therapy through this art I’ve dedicated my life to. This play created an avenue for us to authentically reveal and process our trauma, our hate, our fear, our Love, our hopes, our nightmares, our weaknesses, our strengths and to move toward being made whole again.
Now it’s 2018 and, after several revisions, we finalized a script, we found actors to breathe life into the words that we birthed during those weekly meetings, and we started rehearsing. IN THE MIDST OF METAL CLOUDS became more than just a play for us and I’m proud of the work that we’ve done, literally and emotionally, to get here. We needed each other. We STILL need each other. We all we got! Come and be a part of our journey this Sunday, July 22 RSVP Link in Bio
