Adding splashes of living colour into your life has been proven to be good for your mental health. You don't have to be an avid gardener, have big garden space or need hours to water and maintain plants to achieve this- some plants will just do the job year round with no fuss. Leacadendron Jester is on of those plants - check out the amazing foliage colours on this show off!

Today’s #floweroftheday is the Casuarina or She Oak. The word ‘casuarina’ derives from the word ‘cassowary’. They have fine textured evergreen foliage, that looks like the feathers on the bird. She Oak foliage means that it is often mistaken for a pine tree, and like pine trees, she oaks have little cones full of seeds. The foliage is not made up of leaves, but rather very fine ridged branches or ‘branchlets’. It is a great tree for attracting birds to your garden and I also found that it’s very popular with Huntsman spiders when we had one growing close to our house #floweringnow #australianplants

A little splash of color to break up the perennial border.
Love how long lasting the flowers are on the Echinacea, seems like they’re blooming all summer long.

Flowering Now: An interesting geranium in the garden this morning

This geranium came from a broken shoot my wife found on the street one day and has grown into a lovely plant. It is quite different from a more typical geranium with these small, thin, petals on its flowers.

The Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) is native to the Mediterranean region. I’ve always wondered why they were called Snapdragons and Wikipedia tells me that “The common name ‘snapdragon’, originates from the flowers' reaction to having their throats squeezed, which causes the ‘mouth’ of the flower to snap open like a dragon's mouth” so next time I see one, I’ll give it squeeze to see what happens #floweroftheday #floweringnow #flowerstagram

Managed to catch this small wasp as it landed on the beautiful Boronia lanuginosa (Rutaceae). Sometimes you're just at the right place at the right time.

B. lanuginosa is known to be extremely variable, particularly in flower morphology, depending on which substrate it is growing in. It is found widespread across the Top End mainly on lateritic and sandstone-derived substrates

WEEKEND QUIZ: WHO AM I?
You may find me growing at Hantam National Botanical Garden at #Nieuwoudtville, #floweringnow from August to September. I like to grow on clay soils in predominantly Renosterveld vegetation from the Bokkeveld Escarpment to the Western Karoo and Calvinia. My relatives are widespread from Nigeria and Ethiopia southwards to the Cape Peninsula. I am thought to be pollinated by long tongued flies.
Do you think you know who I am? The first ten visitors arriving at Hantam NBG with the correct answer at the gate will have free entry to the gardens.

Jane’s garden is full of all the things I love. Things I used to grow in my Victorian gardens. For me flowers bring up so much emotion and memories, and jonquils are one of the Winter favourites. People tend to either love or hate the heady scent of the jonquil. I always loved it, but maybe because mum did? I have always associated jonquils with mum and then also with Jane, two of the most warm and nurturing people in my life. Jonquils make me remember nice walks around all of our respective gardens, chatting about life, children, husbands, flowers, gardening. Digging up clumps of bulbs and perennials for swapping and sharing is something gardeners do at this time of year. For the joy of seeing a little part of your garden taking off in the garden of someone you love. My produce usually thrived in Jane’s garden, as she is a very caring gardener, ensuring her plants get what they need as much as possible. Sharing your plants is like an insurance policy in a way, in that if something happened to your bulbs or perennials, you know you could always start again by getting some from mum or Jane. I much prefer that to buying them from a shop. Although I did love to order things we didn’t have from Tesselaars!!! Jonquils are very resilient, like my relationships with Jane and mum. They survive almost anything life throws at them, growing even through neglect. So much to love about these flowers. #wintergardens #blooming #jonquil #gardensoflove #floweringnow

The Wonga-wonga vine, (Pandorea pandorana), is a fast-growing Australian native climbing plant. It can be found in eastern Australia from Queensland to Tasmania growing vigorously over tall trees. It’s botanic name comes from the legend of the Greek goddess Pandora, because of the similarity of the seed capsules to Pandora’s Box (botanists have great imagination!). Unfortunately it only flowers for about three weeks in late winter #floweroftheday #floweringnow #flowerstagram #australianplants

Is there a fragrance more beautiful than that of the Daphne odora? A long time ago, according to Greek legend, Daphne caught the attention of Apollo, the sun god. Apollo pursued her and just before being overtaken, Daphne pleaded to her father, the rivergod Ladon, for help. So Ladon then transformed Daphne into a laurel tree with sleek branches, shining leaves and beautiful flowers. This species is native to China, Japan and Korea. They are usually short-lived, cannot be transplanted and all parts of the plant are poisonous #floweroftheday #floweringnow #flowerstagram #fragrantflowers #daphne
