It won’t be a massive shop update on Friday, but there’s going to be a nice variety of Welsh lady pieces. I’m looking forward to seeing this little plaque once it’s fired The kiln is cooling after the bisque firing last night. I’m really hoping the weather warms up considerably tomorrow for a day of glazing in the studio. Our boiler has been on the blink this weekend, so it’s been an extra chilly one here. Thank goodness for our wood burning stove! .
I get quite a few questions about the tools I use for sgraffito. If you’re interested, then these four are my most popular at the moment (if making pottery is not your thing this’ll be boring! It might be boring my even if you’re keen ). The furthest left and right are from Diamond Core Tools. I treated myself after Christmas. They’re expensive, especially when you factor US shipping and import tax, but they’re amazingly sharp. They’re especially good to use when things are a little drier than I usually work them, so prone to flaking with less sharp tools. The square ended carving tools is fab for cleanly cutting away larger areas and tidying up rims. I can’t give a wholly glowing review though because another tool I got from them fell apart the first time I used it - the stylus ends both fell out. Easy enough to fix with a bit of super glue (when I get round to it), but very disappointing given the high price. Having said that, the ones that didn’t fall apart have quickly become ‘go to’ tools. The second from the right is probably my favourite ever - a pin tool (think that’s what you call it) which was part of a beginners throwing set that I’ve had since I got started. The little carving tool (second left) is on it’s last legs, the wire has almost snapped, but I can’t find any as sharp. Has anyone got a reliable supplier of sharp little carving tools in the UK? The replacements I’ve ordered lately just aren’t as good
