The biggest reason I loved being a nanny is because it was a daily reminder to see the world from far away with big eyes. it was like being on a play date with the least judgmental, most open minded person ever all day long, teaching me to be more like that too. It gave me the opportunity to get down on the floor and just play, to let go of what I thought I knew or had to do and follow my intuition just as they did — seeing the world from the perspective that everything is so big and wonderful and we are so so small. There are no answers, nor any real need to find them; you’re just fully immersed in curiosity and authentic joy. Aka magic.
Your key role as a nanny is essentially to keep another human alive — which, yes, big job — but also the most simple because you use your own survival instincts to care for others. And tapping into that is nothing short of literally just *BEING* — and caring for another heart-beating, breathing, human — who, for that moment, sees you as their whole wide world. WE NEED TO BE OUR WHOLE WIDE WORLD IN THAT SAME EXACT WAY.
Go down the list: have you eaten? have you had enough water? did you sleep well? did you pee your pants? have you played today? when’s the last time you laughed so hard you DID pee your pants? These are the things we NEED - and sometimes we bounce so hard from one thing to the next, or get so wrapped up in what may be out of our control, that we neglect ourselves in the most fundamental ways.
We are told that we have to let go of our inner-child who daydreams and follows their instincts and eats when they’re hungry and sleeps when they’re tired and says no to things that don’t bring them pure joy. That’s all we know HOW to do as children. Animals and babies live in the present moment because the present moment is all they know.
Once we learn how to let that inner-child back out and let our guts be our guides, and MESH that with the knowledge and abilities that we have learned up until now — that’s when we really start finding answers and making our dreams our reality.
