My idea of a care package.
Mostly my love languages don’t express primarily as gift giving or acts of service.
I tend more toward quality time and touch.
But I do find that when I want to really, deeply nurture somebody while simultaneously giving my soul some expression ... I cook.
With the highest quality, freshest ingredients possible.
Someone I care about a lot is healing from major back surgery.
I’m hoping these gifts of love bring healing and joy.

What's your favourite food texture?

This is a question I often pose as someone works on connecting to food after years of eating through diet rules and restriction.
.
Sometimes identifying a favourite taste or specific food is too loaded. Too overshadowed by allowed vs forbidden; good vs bad.
.
Texture can be more neutral. No one texture is considered better or worse...or heaven forbid 'fattening'. So far diet culture hasn't made any rules about it...that I know of anyway.
.
So, if you're making your way back to food after being disconnected I'd invite you to consider texture as a great place to start.
.
1. Find your favourite texture.
2. Add it to all your meals if you can.
3. Notice any change to your satisfaction levels.
.

Your first meal of the day should provide nourishment, pleasure, satiety and ENERGY.

Things to consider:
✅The weather: freezing cold or unbearably hot and/or humid?
✅Did you get a good night’s sleep or hardly any sleep at all?
✅Do you have less than optimal digestion (e.g., tend towards bloating, diarrhea, constipation or acid reflux)?
✅Do you exercise before or after breakfast?
✅Do you drink your breakfast (e.g., shakes) or eat your breakfast?
✅How do you typically feel 1 to 2 hours after your first meal of the day?
(E.g., Tired? Craving sugar or caffeine? Energized? Focused and productive?)

All of these things can influence how effective your first meal of the day is in terms of giving you sustained energy.

The best things in life often come out of left field. Pasta with (inhale) saffron, tuna, cipollini, mint, basil, pistachio, orange peel and tomato (exhale). All local everything. Plus a 1/2 liter of white wine because I’m metric system stupid. Oh well. Being surprised is the best because it means we were without expectation for just a second. Pasta wine wisdom math. 🤓

Good morning! I'm not quite used to eating breakfast when it's still dark but I try to listen to my body which today clearly said - enough of this lay in, get up and go! So I did and found myself immediately hungry.
.
I often discuss it with clients - should we or should we not eat breakfast? At what time? What should it be? .
.
I honestly think that meal patterns should be tailored to individual needs. Some people benefit from leaving breakfast until later, some face sugar crash and need to eat first thing in the morning. Some enjoy high protein/low carb varieties whereas others need carbs to keep them going especially if they're physically active. So what's the answer? Test it and find out what works for you! And then, be prepared that it may change :-)

Lunch today...pimped up nachos. It's definitely one of my favourite meals. Probably because my favourite food texture is crunchy!

What's your favourite food texture?

This is a question I ask all people as they start working on their relationship with food. Connecting to your body and senses around food pays off big time. Eating food you actually enjoy is key.
.
Texture is part of enjoyment.
.
I also find that texture is a little less of a minefield than taste. Taste comes with so many 'diet mindset' rules (I'm looking at you 'no sugar' movement). Often texture is more neutral.
.
Once you discover your fave texture you can start adding it to meals to boost satisfaction.
.
Crunchy? How about crisps, croutons, nuts, pappadoms.
.
Soft? Add some hummus, bechamel, gravy.
.
You get the picture.
.
So, what's your favourite food texture? How can you add it to more meals and snacks?

P.s if you too are a crunchy nacho lover that gets annoyed at the soggy chips I have a pro tip - melt the cheese on the chips first and then add your wet salsa or meat/bean mix. Game changer!

When you eat with awareness sometimes you use food to relax, comfort or soothe.
.
Emotional eating is only a 'problem' if it's not helping you with the situation you are using it in. Sometimes food is just the thing you need. Sometimes it's not.
.
It's good to have options so that you can use them for self care as needed. It's okay for food to be one of those options.
.
My afternoon ritual is to have an iced coffee and some quiet time before the dinner/bath/bed routine begins with my girls. It's not always as quiet as I like but it's a little pause in the routine. The iced coffee part is important to my ritual. I look forward to it, I savour it. It does exactly what I need it to in this moment.
.
Don't be scared of food (or iced coffees) being part of your emotional self care.

OMG. This. Cortile Pepe. Again. I can’t believe I’m so lucky to eat this dessert. Articulation is lost in consumption (and I was too distracted to take a picture of the menu for reference), but, bottom line: all those colors are vegetables. Carrots, beets, spinach (?), etc. A delicious pudding with a vinegar-punch. Wow. Quickest way to my heart is to thwart that sweet/savory paradigm. Perfetto beyond. ❤️

Excuse me while I swoon. A glass of prosecco poured upon arrival. Truffles that smell of the earth, fertile. Bottarga from Palermo, subtle. Seafood crudo so fresh I’m left speechless, melting. Amaro from this island, perfetto. Cannolo deconstructed with almond and orange and shaved chocolate, ricotta so fresh it teeters on savory. Amore. I’m in love. No competition. Completion. In towns like these, like my tiny/nosy Cefalù, “authentic” often gives way to “touristic”. Which is a bland bummer. Alas. I’ll take artistic interpretation over complacent mediocrity any day. Plus, arancini are nice, but, duh, she fancy at heart. ❤️

Most legit frozen pizza crust that we’ve found yet is the Central Market imported Italian pizza crust. Topped with tomato paste, sweet Italian sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella, and basil with a drizzle of EVOO all baked on a piping hot pizza steel. Easy pizza dinner for a lazy Friday.

When in Umbria, you roll your tongue and order the truffles. Strengozzi al tartufo. The flavor of IRL truffle is quite nuanced (as opposed to the “truffle flavor” that often assaults and is added to oils/salts); it’s subtle and should be respected as such. No need to attack the senses. Delicate is the name of this game. ❤️
