"The recent invention of the Diorama, which had carried optical illusion one stage further than the Panorama, had led in some studios to the pleasantry of 'talking 'rama', and a young painter who frequented the Maison Vauquer had inoculated the boarders there with the disease[...] 'Aha! here comes a fine souporama,' cried Poiret, as Christophe came in respectfully bearing the soup."

“She ignores the girls’ protests and sends them to bed, then she goes to the kitchen and fixes a pitcher of margaritas. She takes the pitcher, along with two glasses dipped in coarse salt, out to the backyard and leaves it all beside the two lawn chairs set up near the little garden where the cucumbers are doing their best to grow.” - Practical Magic, Alice Hoffman (1995) •

I couldn’t quite justify getting drunk on margaritas by myself during the week, so instead I made a margarita inspired cake.

{POEMA}
OUS FERRATS
Quan es couen, quins esclats
els ous ferrats
fins i tot, si no es vigila,
poden fer alguns disbarats.

I’m taking myself on a DIY writer’s retreat this weekend and I’m very excited to hole up and become isolated and weird and lose track of time, much like the main character of one of my favourite Susanna Kearsley books. Maybe with better food though? Wish me luck! 🤞🏼✌🏼

The modern-day plotline of this book features a writer working on her next novel while living in a cottage by the Scottish coast. Since I read this book I’ve been obsessed with the idea of doing this myself, not-so-ideal eating habits notwithstanding.

"He resembled, to an extraordinary degree, an asparagus. His long narrow stalk did not appear to have any shoulders at all; it nearly tapered upwards, growing gradually narrower and narrower until it came to a kind of point at the top of the small bald head." [Mr. Botibol]
~
(This great quote is from the short story 'Mr. Botibol' but I was so excited to find myself rereading another story, 'Parson's Pleasure', which I read in some anthology 5 years ago and have been looking for ever since! I couldn't remember the title, author, or any character names, but I've thought about the ending of this story quite often over the years. I never would have guessed it was by Dahl...
~
Does this ever happen to you? Where you remember some detail of a story but have no way of finding it? Until they come up with a type of shazam for books, let's try to help each other out. Comment something you remember about a story you've been looking for or use the hashtag #whatsthatbookwhere in a post. Try to see if anything sounds familiar and help a bookworm out. I'll start in the comments.)

Super stoked about being an @akefestival guest. I'm excited about how we preserve culture and history in the pages of literary text. I'm fascinated about the symbolism of certain foods in books. What do you remember reading in a book that you wanted to eat? Or do?
For me, it was Enid Blyton and midnight feasts. The idea blew my mind and when my children began to read the same books a few years ago, I asked myself why we couldn't have midnight feasts. The answer came back - we could. And so we did. And still do occasionally. We prep a range of snacks, sometimes go to sleep then get up to feast. Granted there's no hiding or sneaking about but that doesn't stop the excitement, purpose or fulfillment

________

What book have you read that triggers a food memory?

OR

What food memory do you have from a book?
OR

What connections would you like to explore between foods and books?

Pray tell!!! PS - shoutout to @Joeladu_ for that photo!

"I cada matí em dóna la carmanyola amb el dinar i un termo amb cafè amb llet. Destapar-la, la carmanyola, a l'hora de dinar, és un dels moments més rics, preciosos i intensos que tinc el gust de viure. A diari, tu." {A "Històries perverses", d'Isabel Clara Simó.}
.

After finishing the wonderfully creepy book The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls I was really in the mood to reread Coraline by @neilhimself! Food figures so significantly in this book—from Coraline’s father’s concocted “recipes” which she detests to the perfect feasts the Other Mother uses to tempt Coraline—and I had a difficult time deciding what to make. I ended up choosing homemade pizza and an apple because these two foods represent Coraline’s reconciliation with her real parents as well as her own self-sufficiency. Throughout the book Coraline prefers to eat frozen pizza to the strange recipes her father makes but near the end of the book, once she has returned from her other family, her father compromises and makes Coraline homemade pizza. Coraline also carries apples with her when venturing into the realm of her other family as a way to feed herself and help her resist the Other Mother’s food. Of course, Coraline can’t live off apples, so I loved seeing her feed herself while her real family was missing. Her meals of canned spaghetti for breakfast, and frozen pizzas, apples, and chocolate cake, were a helpful reminder that meals don’t always need to be perfect they just need to get the job done.
.
.
I received this incredible Coraline inspired key necklace from an @owlcrate box last year and I love it! You can use my code BOOKCOOK to save 10% on @owlcratejr and @owlcrate boxes!

Did some major Korean cooking this weekend to recreate a meal from TOXIC. Yes, they ate Korean food in space! I made: Seolleongtang from scratch, kkaennip jjim, kongnamul, sigeumchi namul. Bought the kkakdugi because hello, I am a glutton but not a glutton for punishment. I don’t do homemade kimchee! Anyway, it was SO yum. It took hours though! I made the soup over two days. The kids loved the soup but were less enthusiastic about the banchan. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #koreangirl #koreancooking #koreanfood #koreanfoodlover #foodstagram #seolleongtang #banchan #foodporn #foodphotography #hungry #hungrygirl #bookfood #foodinbooks #TOXICbook #Toxic

“Come on,” said Moon-Face. “Come and eat a Google Bun and see what you think of it.” - The Magic Faraway Tree (1943)
There is nothing more magical than the food within the worlds Enid Blyton created - especially the Faraway Tree. Who else dreamed of eating pop biscuits and google buns with Silky, Moon-Face and the Saucepan Man?

“Belleville has always been hungry for perfection. People don’t care about much as long as everything looks as it should, as long as they can show off and feel good about themselves. You understand about that, Victoria."
.
.
I’m currently reading The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls and I am absolutely loving this creepy tale about a twelve-year-old insufferable perfectionist, Victoria, who has to single-handedly investigate the sinister happenings in her town after her only friend Lawrence disappears. The book is giving me vibes of The Stepford Wives and Coraline and as someone who has long struggled with perfectionism, its message about how dark perfectionism can be is right up my alley! In addition to the anxiety-provoking nature of the story, the design of the book itself, with illustrated bugs by @wattsalot popping up throughout the pages, is giving me the heebie-jeebies! It also contains one of the most mouth-watering descriptions of caramels which happen to be one of my favorite candies! After reading Some Kind of Happiness (which I will definitely be positing about in the future) @clairelegrand is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I can’t wait to read more from her!

I first read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie book a few years ago and was surprisingly shocked that I enjoyed the @netflixca movie version as much as I did. Have you watched it?! Inspired by the infamous potato pie, while our Spicy Curry Beef and Potato Pot Pie obviously isn’t what they ate during the World War II era when food was rationed, it represents a shared love of pie that both Philip and I grew up on 🥧

On the blog we’re sharing the equation for any pot pie including our spicy and flavourful pie filling and a flakey, buttery, crispy (we can’t stop) pie crust. Get the recipe now on the blog 📚 #booksandfood

"What would your life say if it could talk?" –Tracy K. Smith

Last night, my roommate surprised me with an amazing gift–two signed copies of books by Tracy K. Smith and Robert Hass! Life on Mars, the first volume of poetry I've devoured in one sitting in a while, is an intelligent, thoughtful, and honest meditation on the deep-space pains and pleasures of life. It is a collection that feels both generational for its treatment of family, futuristic for its imaginative settings, and rooted in the present for its ability to face life squarely in the here and now. I begin my last first day of college tomorrow (!!!), and look forward to engaging with poetry as a reader, writer and translator. And I'm excited to begin each morning with breakfasts like this—oatmeal with banana slices, frozen fruit, almond butter, flaxseed, and coconut flakes. 📖💕 #tracyksmith #lifeonmars #poetry #pulitzerprize #poetlaureate #poet #oatmeal #flaxseed #coconut #breakfast #food #literature #books #booksandfood #foodinbooks #reading #eating #collegeeats #collegestudent #healthyeats #foodstagram #bookstagram #igreads #currentlyreading #spoon_uchicago
