“Influential Portuguese surfers took to the streets this weekend to protest the start of an offshore oil drilling project. Signs reading #FrackOff marched down the cities of Lisbon on Saturday, amongst other towns, as local environmental activists defended their beautiful coastline.
Oil companies and the Portuguese government have been strongly pushing for drilling, fracking and pipeline construction since January. A country that prides itself on renewable energy, Portugal’s community is pulling together as over 42,000 residents in the Algarve signed petitions against the exploration of fossil fuels near their home.
It is admirable to see professional surfers like @joaodemacedo7, @alex_botelho and @tiagosacapires use their platforms to spread awareness about this issue, as we collectively band together as a global community to protect our oceans and support efforts towards renewable energy.” - The Inertia’s @shannonreporting
