12.2ft Shortfin Mako Shark and Me :) It's been great to be involved with @sharkweek for their 30th birthday, and stay tuned into @sharkweek Instagram account for the next week for my take over of their account. All my best shark images, my best facts and findings.
This shot, taken by @abc4explore really puts into perspective the length of this stunning mature female. It's very rare to see such large Mako sharks. Primarily because we humans, rarely venture into the Juarrasic park parts of the ocean that they live in. But with a #sharkweek2018 mission on the cards, myself, Andy, @amberandfriends_photography and @outdoors_with_billy ventured to the deep to recce. When this girl turned up, I choked up at the shear size. She came in so fast that Andy screamed out that he saw white lightning underwater. Then bang, it was smashing the engine, the boat, everything. This is classic Mako behaviour however, and with some TLC you can calm them down enough to pick your balls up and slip in. It was the most exhilarating shark dive I have ever done. I was so proud of Andy and Amber filming, but I was jealous that they had 100lb cameras between them and this girl. I have only my go to Harry Potter stick. Long story short, she was amazing. She challenged us, she made us employ all the skills we have all learned over a lifetime of sharking. But ultimately she accepted us and we all shared her world for a day. What's cool to note from this image is the slender body she has, compared to the massive girth around her head. This likely, and awesomely, reflects the fact that she has just pupped, sending another generation of awesome sharks into the deep blue.
