Got coneflowers? Do they have holes in them? Thinned, munched on leaves? Congratulations!!! You probably have Silvery Checkerspot butterflies growing in your garden!
Silvery checkerspot (chlosyne nycteis) butterflies are dependant on coneflowers (echinacea). The adult butterfly lays her eggs on coneflower leaves and the caterpillars hatch and eat the leaves. Don't worry, your flowers won't die, they only eat leaves, not flowers, and their chrysalis, while quite small, is lovely to behold.
Plant some echinacea! It is beautiful as a picked flower, a favorite of many finches in the fall for those tasty seeds, and in the summer, the butterflies and bumblebees love to feed on the nectar of these pleasing plants. And remember, if it looks like your leaves are being nibbled on PLEASE DON'T SPRAY! You may be raising little beautiful silvery checkerspot butterflies.

Stunning Fritillaria imperialis (Crown Imperial) near the Capel Manor pond. This is a bulb native to Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.
These bulbous plants are very fast growing, producing foliage and stems reaching 1.2m in spring, flowering in April to May, and then dying down in early Summer. They belong to the Lily family, which is apparent from the flowers (which have not opened yet in the photo). The Crown Imperial needs a rich, well-drained soil in a warm, sunny position. The bulbs need to be planted at least 30cm deep. Alkaline soil would be ideal.

We've been enjoying a sudden burst of orange butterflies fluttering about. This one was so fun to find, basically posing for me like it enjoyed the attention and spotlight. Knocked this one out in like a week and a half! 4/10 done. The checkered lily (Primula veris) blooms in mid spring and each plant only produces two blooms. The bell-shaped blooms grow in shades of purple or pure white. It is native to Europe and Western Asia; this lily is the official flower of the Swedish province of Uppland.

以前登ったときは出会えなかったので登ったかいがありました。
北海道の平地に咲くクロユリとは変種の関係。染色体数が異なるようであちらは3倍体2n=36、こちらは2倍体2n=24だそう。華やかさはないけどシブいです。
月山では花にカメラを向ける人も居れば、信仰の山として金剛棒に白装束で登られる方も沢山。はたまたスキーで颯爽と下っていく人もいたりと山との付き合い方は様々だなと感じさせてくれます。月山、って名前も良いけど、がっさんって読みも素敵。芭蕉も登った歴史ある山です。

Fritillaria (fritillaries) is a genus of spring flowering herbaceous bulbous perennial plants in the lily family (Liliaceae). The type species, Fritillaria meleagris, was first described in Europe in 1571, while other species from the Middle East and Asia were also introduced to Europe at that time. The genus has about 130–140 species divided among eight subgenera. The flowers are usually solitary, nodding and bell-shaped with bulbs that have fleshy scales, resembling those of lilies. They are known for their very large genome size and genetically are very closely related to lilies. They are native to the temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere, from the Mediterranean and North Africa through Eurasia and southwest Asia to western North America. Many are endangered due to enthusiastic picking. The name Fritillaria is thought to refer to the checkered pattern of F. meleagris, resembling a box in which dice were carried. Fritillaries are commercially important in horticulture as ornamental garden plants and also in traditional Chinese medicine, which is also endangering a number of species.
