4 times in conversation and reading over the past week has the topic of the appendix come up. I took it as a sign to do further research and here’s the super interesting stuff (to me!) I found. Medical opinion has long been the appendix serves no purpose. Recent research however has been finding that may not be true. (Probably because medical research is finally looking more into the gut and its bacteria, something holistic practitioners have been saying for decades is the key to health right from birth due to the majority of our immune system residing here.) We all have microbiomes - or bacteria - in our gut but the levels of good and bad vary on the individual, influenced predominantly by lifestyle and food choices. To be healthy we need more good than bad, simple. Things like antibiotics wipe out all the good and can predispose us to more future illness. Recent scientific research shows that when the gut is hit with something that wipes out bacteria, such as the world dropping out of your backside when you have food poisoning, it seems the good bacteria move into the appendix and use it as a shelter or hiding place until it’s ok to come out and repopulate the gut. Amazing! The human body never ceases to amaze me! So if you still have your appendix but ESPECIALLY if you don’t, actively take care of your gut with fermented foods that are naturally rich in probiotics (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefirs, raw live yoghurt etc) or take a high quality probiotic supplement at the very least. And for f**ks sake, stop popping antibiotics ‘just in case’ or for viral infections that aren’t impacted whatsoever by a pill designed for bacterial infections.
