I have a coeliac disease.

This is a photo of an ancient Roman bridge I came across when I was in Portugal learning about medical herbalism this year. I was thinking about this bridge today and how bridges allow us to move forward in our lives, both literally and symbolically, as we embark on healing journeys.

What is a healing journey? For me, it’s a journey you take to find love within yourself, to heal past traumas and learn lessons that ultimately bring more ease, peace and love to your life. When you start on your path of healing, you can imagine crossing over a bridge. …
It may be a long bridge. It may have some loose boards that shake you to your core. It may evoke some fear in you when you look down to see how high you’ve risen. But when you get to the other side, the air is sweeter, the sky is clearer, and a luminous golden light shines above you. You are surrounded by love.

When you look backwards- back towards the bridge- you can’t find the bridge. There is no more bridge. The bridge is gone because there’s no way to go back. You can only keep moving forward, moving towards the light.

I’ve been geeking out over the crazy interesting world of gut health as part of my own health experiment in order to understand the connection between the gut and the body’s ability to function optimally. So I thought I’d give you the low-down on some key gut health facts 🤓

1) The bacteria in our gut are called the gut microbiota
~
2) Everyone’s gut microbiota composition is unique
~
3) The gut is our “second brain” affecting digestion, mood, health and even how people think. Dr. Elizabeth Hohmann says that “many are looking at the gut microbiota as an additional organ system”.

4) An imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in your gut causes damage such as inflammation, intestinal disorders such as IBS, food intolerances and many other symptoms that may not appear related.

5) Our microbiome are damaged by things such as highly processed foods, sugar, refined oils, antibiotics, hormones (including birth control pills) and anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen).

Then I thought, ‘wait a second, really? Do we really need all of these people? Is it not over complicating it?’ 🤔

I whole heartedly believe many (all?) of us can benefit from a life coach/psychologist/mentor 🙋‍♂️ Many of us may benefit from one or two sessions with a nutritionist/dietitian to expand our understanding on what appears a complex topic when we google and read media articles 😕

And perhaps some of us would benefit from seeing an exercise physiologist/personal trainer to understand how appropriate exercise may help with our health issue (if we have one) 🏋️️‍♀️ Who do you have in your team? 🌍

Either way, with my huge bias 😜, I see the top right part of this diagram being the most important when considering *long term health improvement* 💩

One piece of advise my mother gave me years ago was that ‘if a man thinks like a dick he will always think with his dick’ ....she was talking about my father which at the time was not that helpful for my relationship with him 😏but to be fair his life did remain with the same pattern and ‘karma’ is powerful ... he died both from a broken heart and prostate cancer so perhaps he didn’t ever learn after all. Her ‘advice’ stayed with me however and is something I passed onto my own daughter albeit with a slightly different viewpoint when she started dating ... it turns out there a still too many people with a viewpoint that loyalty and trustworthiness are not always necessary in life when it comes to relationships, it is shifting but there is still work to do with epigenetics. My advice was that we cannot change another’s perception of life but trust and loyalty begins with ourselves and when we are truly in alignment with that within, our outside world will reflect it too and that includes attracting people who operate from the same place... Perfection is overrated, thinking from your heart and soul gives you peace of mind and wellness of body ...and making the right gut brain connection makes trust and synchronicity your partners in crime. Do the work and allow life to work for you not to you and it begins with your relationship with you and when you do that you will give yourself time to respond not react ...and when something does not feel right remain curious and a truth seeker, until you see and know the full picture ...and then make a decision that plays your future forward well. It's simple but the ego is always a player in the game of life.

I adore succulents! I literally oooohh and aaahhh whenever I see them, especially in a beautiful landscape like this one in Laguna Beach. Their colors are absolute perfection to me. Love love love!
So here's some SUPER COOL SCIENCE about succulents. They have beautiful bright colors, right? But do you know what causes them to get even more vibrant during the summer? STRESS! Plants produce more pigments like anthocyanin and carotenoid in response to a variety of stressors, such as increased sun exposure and decreased hydration. The more of these pigments, aka antioxidants, succulents produce, the more intensely colored they become. It's called an ADAPTATION RESPONSE - exactly like what we humans experience when we face stressors. Fight or flight for survival. Our bodies are incredibly adaptable machines. It gets too hot, we sweat. Not enough food, basal metabolic rate slows down. Too much sugar, we pump out more insulin to store it as fat. Too much stress? Body increases cortisol to mobilize energy and fight the inflammation of all this stress. But TOO MUCH STRESS TOO LONG? Well, then we start exhausting our body's ability to adapt. And instead of becoming more colorful and stronger and more resilient in the face of stressors and all the life lessons learned, we become fatigued, weaker, and broken down. Remember from my previous video, acute stress is normal, healthy, and beneficial. It keeps us alert, vigilant, focused, and energized. A little bit of stress makes our colors more vibrant like succulents in summer sunlight. But chronic stress wears and tears, and will eventually cause our colors to fade and our leaves to wither.

Autopsy studies of women who died in car accidents have shown that 40% of women between the ages of 40 and 50 have microscopic cancers in their breasts. About 50% of men between the ages of 50 and 60 have microscopic cancers in their prostate. 100% of us by age 70 have microscopic cancers in our thyroid.
How do you determine whether the cancer grows? The way you eat, move, think, sleep, socialize, and supplement. The biggest lifestyle factor? Food. Diet alone can modulate your risk of cancer by 30 to 35%. We used to think that we had to eradicate every cancer cell, now we know that the neighborhood of those cancer cells matters too. Create a good neighborhood by eating 1-2 pounds of vegetables per day, anti-inflammatory protein and slow carbs, and plant-based fats, as well as getting 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week, and at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Hang out with benevolent people who support your health goals. Break up with sugar and excess quantities of food. Intermittent fasting, meditation, yoga, gratitude. What else helps you? Serotonin is a neurotransmitter made in your brain but believe it or not, it’s made mostly in your gut! 😱

It comes from the amino acid, tryptophan so make sure you’re eating enough protein in your diet! 💁🏼‍♀️

Low serotonin is often associated with depression or just generally feeling low. 😕
.
If you’re feeling depressed, you likely don’t feel sexy and don’t want to have sex EVEN THOUGH good sex and orgasm triggers a happy hormone release! 🙌🏼

Estrogen is needed in the conversion of tryptophan to 5-HTP therefore low estradiol = lower serotonin but too much estrogen in your body pushes tryptophan away from serotonin and down a different pathway. This means either way your mood gets lower. It’s like Goldilocks with estrogen! 🤷🏼‍♀️
.
While not totally understood, testosterone has a positive influence on serotonin in the brain therefore low testosterone in men or women = low serotonin. 👎🏼
.
Too much serotonin can decrease excitatory pathways like dopamine (see my prior post) leading to hyposexual disorder (no interest), no attraction and crappy or non existent orgasms. 😡
.
This is often caused by anti-depressant medications like SSRI’s, serotonin based migraine medications, pain meds like tramadol and fentanyl or possibly with serotonin supporting supplements. 💊
.
Can you test serotonin? Kind of with neurotransmitter testing or organic acid testing (5-HIAA) but remember most all serotonin on testing is made in the gut. But we know the gut and brain are very linked! 👬 .

Our hands. 🤲👌☝️👋✋🤙🤚🤛✊👏🤝🙌👐✍️ (There is a reason there are so many emojis for hand signals!) They show our uniqueness, and one might say Superiority in the animal kingdom.

I mean, other mammals have thumbs too, but our human brain, specifically our neocortex, is what truly distinguishes us apart from the rest.
Some might say it's evolution. 🐒
Other might say it is genetic engineering. 👽

But, regardless of how we got our advanced brains and the BIG real estate in our neocortex that our hands take up, we need to work with THESE HANDS to improve our self-regulation and well-being.
Yep. We do.

One of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais' (founder of The Feldenkrais Method) contributions to the field of neuroplasticity and the brain-body connection was a seminal lesson called, The Bell Hand.
When you do this Feldenkraisian exploration at first, you wonder why the heck you are wasting your time doing it.
From the outside - it is like watching paint dry. Slow. Small. Very insignificant to the eye.
But once you GET it and you feel the effects there is no turning back to this level of self-inquiry and self-awareness.
Working with slow, intentional and attention-based movements of the fingers and hands, not to mention and how these movements impact the ENTIRE muscular tone of the entire body (via the many nervous systems) is where the magic lives.

Business in the front 🥩, party in the back 🥦. While some folks seem to thrive on zero carb, meat only diets as of late, I’m going hedge my bets and eat the vegetables are seasonally available. Why? The anti-nutrients and polyphenols in vegetables create mild hormetic stress in the body that is linked with health benefits. (The carnivores say these plant-nutrients are unneeded, possibly bad—and should be a avoided.) I personally believe the instability and metabolic randomness created by eating vegetables imparts strength into our physiology—making is a more robust phenotype. (If all one can tolerate and eat is “meat”, how resilient are they? No judgement, just sayin’.) Life’s a marathon, not a sprint. My 2 cents!

Here are some of the foods I purchased today. You can see the emphasis on whole, natural foods. There are some pre-cut or bagged veggies and canned food, but it’s for when I have limited time for meal prep. There’s no dairy, eggs, soy, grains, added sugars. I’m opting to skip out on lentils, beans, nuts and seeds for the time being
