WDIA Memphis was the first radio station in the United States programmed entirely for African Americans including black radio personalities. After receiving funding and becoming licensed in 1954 the station's power was increased to 50,000 Watts helping it to reach a great deal of the population and becoming the best radio station in the city. WDIA is known for many community efforts such as the Goodwill Fund that helped to bus disabled black children to school and later expanded to provide college scholarship funding, low income housing projects, boys clubs and establishment of over 125 little league teams. Many music legends of the funk & soul era attribute their success to WDIA including one of their DJ's: the great B.B. King.
Bobby Franklin's Insanity - Bring It On Down To Me (Thomas, 1969)
Heavy drums? Fuzzy guitars? Funky flutes? This 45 has it all. It was produced by Curtis Mayfield after singer Bobby Franklin and his band had moved from Detroit to Chicago but it differs greatly from other records that credit him. In fact, "Bring It On Down To Me" sounds so punchy that some people would rather call it rock than funk. If this single was rarer it would be unaffordable. Fortunately, it isn't.
