How did I end up on a huge empty tram waaay outside of town?
One of the great things that Melbourne offers is a zero-fare tram that goes around the city. Locally, this is called the "City Circle tram." What a great way to explore, right?
Well, my mom and I started off on the correct one, but got off to wander around and got onto another tram that appeared to be the same color and to go the same path.
... We were wrong. 🤭 The tram went up just one stop (#FlindersStreet) towards the direction we wanted to go, and then quickly started going the other way. I assumed that it would go back and we could get off at that last stop.
It kept going and going and going. Soon, it said "outside of zero-fare zone" on the signs at the stops. Uhoh.
I was excited to see more of the outskirts of Melbourne, but it was getting dark outside and we had no idea how to get back. We finally asked some locals and it started a big commotion on the train. They loudly announced "They don't know where they are, they're Americans." It was funny and we all had a good laugh.
We didn't have any Aussie Dollar (ALWAYS carry the currency of the country you're in), which was a silly, and potentially dangerous, mistake.
Finally, everyone got off and we ended up at the maintenance station. As in, "End of the Line now GTFO."
Thankfully, the tram operator was kind enough to take us all the way back.
It ended up being a blessing, because we learned about Australia, on an unplanned 2-hour tour from a local who knew so much.
Always have a plan when traveling!
