Here you can see two flowers of Carpobrotus edulis. It is one of the most invasive species in coastal ecosystems, and you can find it in a lot of different places along the coast. Despite this global distribution, botanists from all over the world don't know if the plant they have in their zones is Carpobrotus edulis or Carpobrotus acinaciformis. Why? Because initially they can differentiate between them by their flower colour (C. edulis is purple, and C. acinaciformis is yellow), but recently they found that C. edulis can grow yellow flowers, and that they can hybridate and produce fertile hybrids.
