The great allium experiment of 2019 is well under way! So far, it has been a pleasant success.
I was worried I planted them too late, in November, but nature has sheparded my baby bulbs through the winter.
All 29 purple sensations came up and are thriving. 6 of the 6 cultivars I planted sprouted and 5 of the 6 survived bambi and his suburban gang of plant snackers!
My garden will be a dream of purple orbs this year - I can not wait!

coming back here is always so bitter sweet for me... i consistently strive to see it through my children’s eyes, to find solice in her familiarity, and to feel gratitude for her gifts. But the truth is, it’s hard for me. I don’t love it here. It doesn’t feel like coming home. It feels cold and sleepy and grey. What i can say, is that being here is an incredible reminder of my privilege. that just because the sunset is not pink and the waves are not warm doesn’t mean I shouldn’t thank my lucky stars for the incredible girl gang that is walking next to me, for my sweet pain-in-the-ass son and his bros who just rode off on beaten up bikes with old skool music shouting from his basket, for the ability to take a three day weekend away and not worry about a lost day of pay, and for the traditions that the good good souls of neskowin never let die. I am truly blessed. do you have a place like this?

Things that make me happy: growing my own food and then turning it into pizza. Because everything goes on pizza around here. 🍕

In all the excitement of warm spring weather and planning our first full-season veggie garden, we might have gotten a little overzealous with our tomato and pepper starts. Today the hubs potted-up 43 tomato plants and we have just as many pepper plants for tomorrow. We weren’t expecting such a high germination rate. The more you know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Finally put in some heavy yard work. Mowed the lawn, retilled front beds, raked , picked up sticks, my big garden has been tilled once, transplanted some tomatoes and peppers. #superwoman #gardener #instagramgarden #mothernature #gardeningforanxiety #spring2019

Helpful garden planning idea!⠀
I love love love this!⠀

These are layouts for three of my raised beds. I tend to do a mixture of rows and square foot gardening in my raised beds, which is kind of interesting because I'm usually a pretty structured person. But when it comes to design I like to mix and match. 😉 .⠀
.⠀ I can't take credit for the artwork though. My friend Abigail, an art major, made it pretty so I could show how this page of my Complete Garden Planner (link in bio) can be used. 😊 I can't stop staring. 😂⠀

🐛🌿Earwigs in the Garden🌱 is on the BLOG 😘 Link in BIO
.
.
🎬Retake: sorry everyone! I had a spotty internet connection when I posted earlier so it kept closing on me and having glitches 🤷‍♀️ See below!
.
.
We ate our first homegrown artichoke yesterday and it was delicious! After harvesting, I plunged it into a bucket of water to draw out any earwigs that might have been be hiding in there....but no earwigs at all! 👍
.
.

This would NOT have been the case a few years ago. ➡️ New on the BLOG is all about earwigs, and I tell you about the epic battle we fought a few years ago. I mean, we were plucking around a hundred earwigs a night. Ew, gross! 😱
.
.
I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend! 💛 By the way, those of you who are trying any of these pest control methods covered, come leave a comment over on the blog so other readers can see all your experiences in one place. 🙏🙏Do this for the roly poly article too! #organicgardening #gardening101

Wow. Flower power. LOVE this! Happy Easter everyone! Blessings!
Tips on Dahlia dividing! Thanks @twigandvine www.oregonland.cc
.
.
@oregonland.cc from @twigandvine - While our area is best known for tulips, I’d have to say, I think we give dahlias a run for their money too.
Depending on the weather, we can have blooms late July until last frost. (Often mid October here.) And while the bloom time can feel brief, the work to grow these babies lasts year round. We’ve had our tubers stored in our insulated cooler all winter, and next begins the real work: dividing hundreds of plants so we can get them in the ground around the first week of May.
This will be our third year growing dahlias as a crop. While I feel like I’m really only beginning to understand all there is to know about growing them as a crop, I’ve been getting so many questions about dividing and storing. Though I’m no expert, I’m always happy to share what’s been shared with me. I’ll jump on live later today and for a quick demo of how we divide. (Or you could always hop over to YouTube and watch @kitchenshane so helpfully demonstrate the division of dahlias. I’ll link it in our bio😉 You can thank me later.)

My pick for #womanfarmerfriday . Thanks to everyone who played along, I love reading your stories! 👩‍🌾💪💕 #Repost @whitefamilyhomesteaders

Happy Friday Everyone!! This is my first time doing a hashtag play along post but when I saw Jackie at @farmgirl_at_last had started #womanfarmerfriday I knew I had to be a part of it. So here's my story on how I got started homesteading. 👩‍🌾
First off my name is Angelina and we started homesteading 8 years ago. It started with my husband wanting to be self sufficient. Our first garden was about 20' x 40' and now we have 10 raised beds that are 10' x 3' each. We have a small orchard with 8 trees, have 6 chickens, process our own firewood, do our own projects and I love to can. 👩‍🌾
The reason I do it, for my kids and for therapy and exercise. I love showing our kids how to grow their own food and the memories we make is all worth the sweat, tears and blood that goes into gardening. Canning is also fun for us and we can enjoy our food long after it's in season. The joy from a harvest or completing a project is therapeutic and so is all the time in the middle. 👩‍🌾
The bonus is exercise, there's no better workout than a homestead workout. Another big reason for it all is to show our kids what hard work is and that it pays off in the end. I hope I didn't bore you too much and go see more stories of other women farming, homestead, gardeners the list goes on by following the hashtag. Now since I spilled my beans let's hear one fun fact about you. ⬇️ Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you get to enjoy some sunshine. 🌞

So, I’m trying a thing. Since we moved into our new home at the start of gardening season, I don’t have enough time to build up the soil in new garden beds. We have a great huge garden already built, but I’m wanting to plant as much food and as many herbs as possible right away, so I decided to give straw bale gardening a go. From what I’ve read, it’s quick and easy, and plants love it. And once the bales break down in the fall, I’ll have some good compost to build up some more beds next spring. It’s worth a try, right? I’m thinking of doing a few rows next to the existing garden.

Has anyone tried straw bale gardening? What was your experience with it?
