---The Black Hand---
Also known as, Unification or Death, was a famed Serbian militant group that helped shape the course of world history. Formed by rogue members of the Serbian military in 1901, the main purpose of the group was to promote the liberation and unification of ethnic Serbs living in areas controlled by Austrian and Ottoman rule. Lead by Dragutin Dimitrijevic, a colonel in the Serbian army, the group was known to have planned/attempted coup d'etats against several different Slavic governments during the early 20th century. Including the famed, May Coup, which lead to the assassinations of the King/Queen (House of Obrenovic), Prime Minister, Minster of the Army, and General-Adjutant of Serbia in 1903. This led to a drastic shift in power and thus permanently affecting European relations in the early 20th century.
The group is debatably most famous for their role in the planning of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, that occurred in Sarajevo, Bosnia on June 28th, 1914. The story goes, that the gunman who actually pulled the trigger, Gavrilo Princip, was recruited and trained by the Black Hand. Quickly following the assassination, Austria-Hungry issued Serbia the “July Ultimatum”, a mix of diplomatic and military altercations that directly propelled the world into its first world war.
