the final resting place of the revolutionary leader ho chi minh - basically vietnam’s george washington. dominating ba dinh square, where he read the declaration of independence on september 2, 1945, ho chi minh’s mausoleum is in keeping with lenin, stalin and mao, an imposing marble edifice without charm or ethereal beauty. in other words, a very soviet design. despite his wishes for cremation, his body is embalmed and on display ten months of the year (it make a trip to russia annually for cleaning). an important pilgrimage spot for vietnamese, the complex is traffic-free and also includes his house on stilts, museum, presidential palace, pagodas and gorgeous botanical gardens - an oasis in the city!
