Something I don’t do often (or at all this training cycle) is run at my goal race pace. Maybe because I thought endorphins during race day will just get me there? My logic is quite unclear, however... today I followed the plan (almost) that called for a 1 mile warm up, 6 miles goal pace, 1 mile cool down. My goal is to get under 2 hours, that might be a little hard considering I’ve been training at a much slower pace. So today, instead of just going for a leisurely run with the intent to just finish the miles and enjoy, I thought... let’s actually try this. Run till your legs start whining to you. Run till you’re a little uncomfortable- because how will you ever get better if you don’t get out of your comfort zone?! I have these lofty goals to get faster but I’m doing nothing to help myself get there if I don’t push myself. So with my watch running, but trying not to look at it too much I went by feel. My warm up is normally at 10 min/mile, today it was 9:10. I felt pretty good, my legs weren’t whining.. I picked it up and kept a steady pace at 8:55 and I could feel a little whining, boy did I want to slow down so I wasn’t uncomfortable but I kept it at that pace for ~3 miles or so and I unfortunately had to turn around due to not being able to get any water out of my water pack. Like it literally wouldn’t come out! And I had no where to stop to get a drink of water. So I had to mess around with that and finally got a tiny sip out and called it quits I ran back keeping a pace of 8:46!!! My dudes... I was running on cloud 9. That was fun- except the no water part.
Side note... I had some pre-workout this morning which I never do. It’s too early in the morning to drink coffee and I never eat before my morning runs because I like to just run out the door before my brain figures out what’s really going on. haha! But I wanted to see how it would make me feel, and it definitely helped me reach some times I didn’t know I was able to keep up! What do you normally eat or drink before your runs?
