Breakfast. The most important meal of the day. But... is this true?
Breakfast doesn’t have to occur early in the morning. Breakfast is simply the meal that “breaks your fast” that you enter while you are sleeping. In fact, studies have shown a possible health benefit to extending your fasting time by delaying your first meal of the day. •
Breakfast doesn’t have to consist of foods like danishes, muffins, doughnuts, oatmeal, or cereal for that matter... in fact, starting your day with these high carbohydrate foods items will more likely to make you feel sluggish, and may cause you to eat more frequently throughout your day to keep blood sugar levels stable.... and potentially lead to more Calorie consumption overall. •
Both of these practices of early, sweet breakfasts are actually marketing ploys of the cereal companies to boost sales. It’s been so ingrained in our culture, that now it’s considered fact, when in reality there is no basis to support this claim... and, it may actually be contributing to the obesity crisis we face today. (in my opinion) Yes, there are studies showing that people who eat breakfast may have a better body composition than those who don’t, but the same is true for studies testing fasting practices... it really is individual and it comes down to overall Calories consumed in a day.
So, if you are someone who isn’t hungry in the morning, don’t force yourself to eat because that’s what you have been told is best... and if you are someone with a sweet tooth, try making your first meal of the day a savory one, full of vegetables, herbs, healthy fats, and proteins... you may find yourself snacking less throughout the day, and inadvertently cutting your overall Calories. •
In my opinion breakfast may actually be the most important meal of the day. Simply because it sets your mentality of whether this is a day you will nourish your body, and do the things that make you healthier... or the opposite. So, start your day with food that not only fills you up, but makes you feel amazing as well. This can be done at 6:00am or 2:00pm... decide each day that you are worthy of feeling happy, healthy, and thriving.... and then become it.
