Yesterday the #Pilgrims Way merged into the North Downs Way national trail. It runs from #Farnham to #Dover, past #Guildford, #Dorking, #Merstham, #Otford and #Rochester, along the #Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and #Kent Downs AONB. The great thing about national trails is that most of them "have a dedicated Trail Manager responsible for maintaining the high quality standards on the Trail. National Trails are waymarked with the distinctive acorn symbol" which makes them easy to differentiate from other footpaths. This means, as a walker, I don't need to keep checking my map due to poor signage, and I don't have to worry about the all to common broken stiles, blocked footpaths, etc. It meant that the walk was far more enjoyable than the previous 2, despite the rain.
I had some company for the 2nd half of the walk, although it wasn't planned. Quite by chance I stumbled upon another walker, one of the very few I saw that day, as I emerged from shrubbery in some woodland (AKA an outdoor loo! Well, it's rare that I pass a public toilet on my walks). I'm not sure who was more surprised, me or him! 😁 But we struck up conversation and just naturally began walking together. What I love about this journey is meeting people I probably wouldn't get to meet otherwise, and hearing their tales 🙂
So all in all a really pleasant walk, starting near Farnham railway station and ending with a pint of Hogs Back cider in the rather nice Ye Olde Ship Inn, Guildford 😊
