When there is a decrease in the levels of good gut bacteria many different health problems can arise. University of Colorado at Boulder via Eurekalert — In recent years, reams of research papers have shed light on the health benefits of probiotics, the “good bacteria” found in fermented foods and dietary supplements. -
Now a first-of-its kind study by University of Colorado Boulder scientists suggests that lesser-known gut-health promoters called prebiotics – which serve as food for good bacteria inside the gut — can also have an impact, improving sleep and buffering the physiological impacts of stress.

“We found that dietary prebiotics can improve non-REM sleep, as well as REM sleep after a stressful event,” said Robert Thompson, a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Integrative Physiology and first author of the new study published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.

Prebiotics are dietary fibers found naturally in foods like chicory, artichokes, raw garlic, leeks and onions. When beneficial bacteria digest prebiotic fiber, they not only multiply, improving overall gut health, but they also release metabolic byproducts. Some research suggests these byproducts can influence brain function, explains lead author Monika Fleshner, a professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology.

For the study, the researchers fed 3-week-old male rats a diet of either standard chow or chow that included prebiotics. They then monitored the rats’ body temperature, gut bacteria and sleep-wake cycles – using EEG, or brain activity testing — over time.

They found that the rats on the prebiotic diet spent more time in non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep, which is restful and restorative, than those on the non-prebiotic diet.

These two pictures were taken only 1 month apart! After months and months of #workouts , a #cleandiet , taking my #vitamins and seeing hardly any #results , I was ready to throw on the towel, I didn't care anymore. Then early this year I got a kick in the butt. I had #highbloodpressure , my #thyroid was acting up and me being me, I was determined to fix it all naturally. I had already started working out, cut down on alcohol, cut down on caffeine, tried taking cbd oil, meditating, I tried everything. And then, a big tall ray of sunshine, @stanefferding ,walked into my #gym , @beatpersonaltraining , and shared @theverticaldiet . I had already been watching his YouTube videos and loved how he was all about #guthealth and addressing #nutrient and hormone deficiencies. See, I'm a numbers person, I have found that i am most motivated by changing my blood lab numbers. So, challenge accepted, I pushed myself harder in the gym and started #theverticaldiet and my numbers changed just after a couple months, which motivated me even more! Some days I'm super organised at preparing work lunches to the point of gourmet and other days I'm running around trying to put a load of washing on the line, do the dishes (we have no dishwasher!!) and walk our two dogs Penny and Tilly (the bitchezzz as they are collectively called) before I open the fridge to see what food we have left that can be thrown together and equate to a "healthy" lunch. Today it was snow peas, a handful of raw cashews, a tin of sustainably caught tuna with a banana (which comes in its own neat little, environmentally friendly package). Healthy eating doesn't have to be perfect, commitment to supporting the health of your whole body is key (and your hip pocket, buying your lunch everyday is expensive, plus often loaded in carbs and food ingredients that can upset your gut and create alot of consequential bloating!!) .

If time is often the enemy for you (which seems to be pretty much everyone these days) try these handy hints to save yourself from running out the door, unprepared and stuck with whatever is available close to your workplace (or not available, don't let yourself go hungry!)

• Pre-prepare work containers of ready to go dry salads (add dressing before you leave) , crunchy veggies, soft boiled eggs, mixed nuts or natural yoghurt on a day when you have a spare 30min (mine is on Sunday)
• Ensure that you always have "easy to grab and go" fruit available in your fruit bowl (e.g. bananas, oranges, mandarines, apples)
• Keep a few handy tins of sustainabley caught and omega 3 rich oily fish in the cupboard (e.g mackeral, sardines, alaskan salmon) in the pantry to provide you with a good serve of quality protein to keep your blood sugar levels steady from lunch time and into the afternoon
• Make more at dinner time to ensure that you have exciting left overs for lunch the next day!! .

So, we recently got Wesley a full panel allergy test. He was having some small reactions on his skin and with his attitude. Shaun and I had high hopes this would give us a few answers. He got his blood drawn, which was somewhat traumatic for both him and I. Then waited a couple weeks for the results.

Well, we got the results yesterday and I was a little shocked by the results. (Now, these are sensitivities NOT intolerant/emergency allergies. He’s just sensitive to specific foods). We found out that he was highly sensitive to eggs, clams and dust mites!!!!! He is also mildly sensitive to dairy, pineapple, hazelnut, peanut, sugar cane, dogs and some gluten. These are all based on a IgG food allergy test. Elimination of IgG-positive foods can improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, autism, ADHD, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and epilepsy, according to numerous clinical studies.

The doctor recommended we try and go dairy free, sugar free, gluten free and egg free for 6 weeks with Wesley, and see how it goes. Then reintroduce the food groups back in and see if he has any reactions.

Wesley is already a picky eater, so this will definitely be interesting.

I feel so passionately about people (but girls, ladies, and women especially) understanding that weight doesn't define your value, it doesn't define who or what you are and it definitely doesn't define your health!! It can happen when estrogen is high or even when estrogen is normal but progesterone is too low. 👇 ..
It causes symptoms like PMS, heavy or irregular periods, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, brain fog, mood swings, emotional, depression, irritability, low libido, sleep disturbances, sugar cravings, breast cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, thyroid problems, gall bladder problems, and blood sugar issues.

When your body hates you.

Had another IBS flare up tonight. Wanna know why? I ate crappy unhealthy food. 🙅🏼‍♀️
.
I’ve had IBS and mild lactose intolerance since I was about 6 years old. I remember being sick almost every morning of elementary school because I’d have a big bowl of milk and sugary cereal every morning (milk makes me sick obviously and sugar is one of my IBS triggers) my parents thought I had extreme anxiety and would encourage me to do breathing exercises on the way to school.

Of course that didn’t help... and I felt crazy.
.
Flash forward to 8th grade when I was finally diagnosed. And of course that was back when there wasn’t much research done on IBS and not many meds approved for children. I was told to figure out my triggers and avoid them. (Try to avoid basically all your favorite foods during your teenage years and tell me how that goes for you)
.
Since college I’ve been pretty successful at avoiding my trigger foods and I’ve cut out almost all dairy except for ice cream and cheese on occasion (and always in moderation)
.
But now, I RARELY have IBS episodes because my new nutrition focused lifestyle and my superfood shake have helped heal my gut! I used to get sick on average 5 times a week. Now it’s less than 2 a month! No magic pills. Just learning to eat healthy and smart and actually getting in the right nutrients through my shake that aide in healthy digestion!

Before the idea of Mettle + Grace had even reached my realm of possibilities or future endeavors. The purpose crossed my path many times. When I was head chef at Monk Bodhi Dharma we had a regular customer who was low fructose and gluten free. She was the most lovely lady and I always felt awful if I didnt have a little baked treat appropriate for her.
In my personal life, my mum had different friends diagnosed with illnesses and paired diets. They asked for my help in the kitchen as they struggled with what to cook. One of our family friends, who was like an auntie to me was diagnosed with MS in her early thirties and years later was diagnosed with cancer aswell. Her diet was low residue - a very difficult one! But she was the most incredible lady, a huge campaigner for women and inspiring for my sister and I. Each time we visited she had the biggest smile. You wouldn't have thought her MS and cancer were bringing her down - her resilience was out of this world! Amazing!

Happy International Yoga Day errybody.
I used to teach yoga...then I had a baby. Now I do little yoga flows in my front room and go to class whenever I can find a babysitter...but honestly, my yoga teacher training changed my LIFE! Yoga is a work-in, while doing some working out, and I’m so grateful for how that began such a beautiful journey of healing for me. It’s been 4 years since my training finished- how did that even happen? I think yoga can change a life...so if you’re looking for a change, go find a studio, and just sit on your mat and cry if you need to. Or pummel your way through the poses. Or enjoy getting to know your body a little better.
Just do it.

I am freaking tired. We moved in 4 hours. It was insane. I don’t know where half of my stuff is and we’re sleeping on a mattress on the floor. It’s cool. I’m cool. You’re cool. I need some yoga.

Then you must be much too busy to drive to a fast food restaurant 🍔🍟 , and too busy to look through a menu, order food and wait 30-60 minutes for it to arrive? 🤗

This took me approximately 6 minutes to prep and cook! 👩🍳 I’m not a chef I’m a dietitian 👩💻 I teach people simple tips for quick and easy cooking that tastes good! 😋
1. Heat pan on burner to medium/high heat
2. Drizzle 2 tsp garlic infused oil to pan
3. Add frozen shrimp to pan
4. Set timer for 2 -3 minutes
5. Add bagged triple washed salad 🥗 to a bowl
6. Flip shrimp and reset timer
7. Wash grape tomatoes and add to salad bowl
8. Sprinkle chopped nuts on salad
9. Remove shrimp 🍤 from burner when pink and pour over salad
10. Add dressing of choice. voila!

Chocolate bars, chips, ice cream are very close friends of mine that I have had an intimate relationship with for years. And if I am being completely honest I have to say I still have times that I struggle with craving those silly food items. BUT those cravings usually come when I skip my daily healthy shake. Summers in California // So why do Californians love their juice so much!? 🤔

I think it's safe to say, Californians have a stereotype, especially come summer time that we are known for. Sunny beach living, bronze and glowing skin, in shape bodies and busy but laid back attitudes. Why?

Well let's break it down, like any stereotype it's not a one size fits all but our lifestyles have a lot to do with our weather and how conscious we are of diversity and toxicity. We must be open before we can learn about anything, wouldn't you agree? And California is very open minded. So we drink juices but not just any juices, they are cold pressed veggies and fruits like the one I have here, jam packed with 🍍🥒🍋🍏(funny there's not many veggie emojis I just realized). The reason is contrary to the assumption that food is where we get our energy from, modern life has turned the processing of foods by the body into something that is exerting, often draining with the way we work and try to keep up with life with pre-packed meals. We are constantly eating, munching whether we get up from our desks or not, sitting in the car, breathing car exhaust, air-conditioing systems, using products and food with added or unknown ingredients for preservatives etc. We're living in a world designed to sustain a lifestyle we weren't necessary originated for.
Food and the processes connected with it consume a big portion of our daily energy reserves. Digestion, absorption, utilization of nutrients; the metabolising of food sometimes needs to be supported. Enter juices! Juices are packed with nutrients but in a form that requires less energy for our body's to metabolize. So more energy is freed up to process, rebuild and eliminate toxins, or left over fat etc. This is why some people fast as well. Juices still deliver nutrients to the body but in a much simplified way to compliment what you are already eating. Juices need to be primarily vegetables with added supplements of fiber (magnesium) since there is no fiber in juices. And don't forget your probiotics!
