Luna was bought to keep my red Moon Cactus company (who has since died ). I made the mistake of looking up this type of plant and its care needs AFTER I lost the red 'top' of the last one.
I find these so fascinating. Turns out the multicoloured tops are actually grafted onto other types of cacti and they are designed by humans!
The only way to allow the colourful cacti to survive, is to graft them onto healthy cacti. This is because the colourful parts (which come in multi colours such as yellow, red and orange) do not contain any chlorophyll (which adds the colour green to plants), which is why such colours are able to show through. The grafting process allows this interesting cacti to get all the nutrients and chlorophyll it requires through its host in order to survive!
So basically it's a big fat leech!! Nevertheless, now that I know this I can't wait to create experiments of my own with its little babies that are slowly growing from the sides.
I still have the host cacti from the red one that I lost, am hoping to use that as a basis for my future experiments.
