Another great opportunity to work with the young Scorpions this morning.
Smaller group today with some of the fellas sick, so we slowed things down a bit and had some fun while going over some important lessons. The lesson I want to share is not one I shared with them, but one I want to share with my fellow coaches:
Our plan isn't complex, nor should it be. Based upon Coach @robtrainsystems R7 system (some of you may have read how we implement it in my recent hockey mobility post), we went over the days plan. Today saw a breathing drill, some crawling variations, linear acceleration work, rotational power work with led balls, and some simple bodyweight strength exercises. Nothing fancy, but everything we needed to make progress today. Lesson here: have a structure plan & be prepared.
It's important to discuss the plan with the group prior to action. This helps establish the "why" and done well, will help to build "buy in".
Why is it important to have a plan/program/map and discuss it with those you're prescribing it to? To quote out of @coach_brettb #concsiouscoaching book: "A map does not chart, it unlocks and formulates meaning; it forms bridges between here and there, between disparate ideas that we did not know were previously connected." Which I believe was from the works of T.S. Spivet.
Communicating how what we're doing or about to do, as it relates to how it will help the athlete is ultra important and as coaches, forces us as a collective field to not just fill programs with filler and fluff.
Motivational speeches and memes are great and all , but communicating "why", showing you care, and doing things that have meaning and purpose win at the end of the day.
When these guys know what they have to do, why they should do it, and how it needs to be done, they rock the house. Nice job today, fellas! @zachary.m_ @gcscorpions_14 @ssb315 @papabear196846 @amandamammy and the rest of the squad
