Free men name themselves.
The invasion and colonization of Afrika, its natural resources and those of us who took back our power, is reflected in many countries' names. Ghana, which was renamed after independence by Kwame Nkrumah and J. B. Danquah, the word comes from Ouagadougou and actually means "Warrior King", named after our ancient Ghana Empire.
Namibia or Republic of Namib was renamed by Mburumba Kerina, who fought for its independence. Its name means "Vast Place" in Nama.
Ethiopia was named after Greek Orthodox influence and means the "Land of Burnt Faces" when Christianity was new to Afrika in the 4th Century. Sudan, with is Arab history, kept it's Arabic name, which means "Country Of The Blacks".
Malawi, in the other hand is a continental name and means, "Land of Flames", from the ancient local ritual of burning dead grass away to prepare the land for cultivation. It chose its symbolic name when it won Independence in 1964.
Senegal is from the Portuguese colonizer mispronunciation of the Wolof word, "Sunu gaal", which means "Our canoe or boat".
Mozambique, kept their foreigners name, which means "Land of Musa Al bique", after an Arab Muslim invader, sometime after the 7th century. Chad means large lake, but its name comes from the Arabic word Tŝād, again after an Arab Muslim invader, when Chad was wet and fertile land.
Mali, in Mandinka traditionally means "Hippopotamus", but means "The Kings Land" and Cameroon, who still have their colonizer name, that means "River shrimp" in Portuguese.
Burkina Faso, previously named Upper Volta, was given its new name, meaning “Land of Incorruptible People", in 1984 by Pres Thomas Sankara.
