The cringey 30-secs clip was launched on 15 August, and has since received over 3,000 retweets on Shopee Singapore’s Twitter account and over 346,000 views on its YouTube channel. It’s also the ‘butt of jokes’ and conversations online, as the world collectively gasps at the very strange ad. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the ad, Ronaldo can be seen scoring his latest victory only to look up and realise nobody’s paying him any attention because everyone’s busy shopping on Shopee. He scratches his head and utters “Shopee?” before breaking into an awkward rendition of Baby Shark. Ok… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Leading ad industry publication B&T has chimed in with their sentiments, calling it “the worst ad in the history of ads”. Guess even the handsome mug of the world’s top footballer can’t save the ad. Honestly, we thought we were looking at Ro(bot)naldo! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The TV commercial was shot in promotion of Shopee 9.9 Super Shopping Day. And despite the broken hearts of global football fans, we can’t deny that Shopee has succeeded in generating interest and talk with their latest ad.
