Did you know there is a correlation between gum health and heart disease?

I loooove getting creative with healthy food, especially salads, there are so many delicious nourishing salads you can make that taste delicious and definitely “aren’t boring”. This salad is made with my absolute faaaaave - buckwheat pasta, tuna, nutritional yeast, baby spinach, avocado, black sesame seeds, and dressed with a little bit of olive oil 😋It’s so satisfying, not to mention filling 👌🏽something so simple and easy to put together that is healthy and nourishing for your body 🙌🏼 try not to fixate yourself too much on just counting calories...if you eat whole foods mostly calorie counting isn’t too much of a big deal, try focus more on counting nutrients and ensuring each meal you eat contains a good amount of fats, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals and carbohydrates 💪🏽

After sleep of 8 hour (hopefully). We find ourselves stiff and tense muscles. Although morning stiffness can also have other health reasons too.
But in general, after long hours without any any range of motion in joints and muscles.

I don't have a hometown the way that convention would have it. In fact, of the many places I've lived, I never stayed longer than 4 years. Constantly, I remind myself of my fortune to have seen and experienced many cultures and regions.

In all of it, I have to say, no place is quite like the #bayarea with it's political action and diversity. The lessons of my youth have formed me into the #socialjustice and #healthadvocate I am today.

Of all my learnings the best one I have gained is the power to listen. It's free, but worth its weight in gold. We are not saviors, we are community members. We are all stronger together.

One way you can start is to keep #reading and finding new points of view. I constantly cycle through upwards to 4 books at a time, the constellation of conversation gets my mind racing with ideas. Our mom had a cough for a couple of months. She wasn’t one to shy away from a doctor visit so she went and was told it was allergies and that she shouldn’t worry about it. When the cough persisted she was prescribed medication to suppress it. About a year later, she presented with shoulder pain but the cough was gone. Her shoulder pain was attributed to arthritis and she started physical therapy, when physical therapy wasn’t alleviating the issue the orthopedist suggested an MRI. It was that MRI that showed something was destroying the bone and on October 17, 2016 that was the first time the word “CANCER” was mentioned.
Our mom was a healthy, non-smoker, but she had symptoms that were attributable to lung cancer. If there’s anything I have learned through this experience it is that YOU HAVE TO ADVOCATE for yourself. No one knows your body like you do. If one doctor writes off your concerns go to another, go until you get the answers you’re seeking. 🐞

I had a nasty headache over the weekend, it through me back to 6th grade when I had to explain to my teacher why I couldn't participate.
After my genius husband reminded me to use my iTOVi scanner, all my results where hormone related! I took 1 Phytoestrogen and 1 Deep Blue Complex (natural aleve) I was SO much better. It felt so good to fix the root of my headache.

Here is my current physique update! Since moving down to Texas 2.5 months ago, I have gained 3 pounds. I have been a little bit more lenient with myself when it comes to enjoying treats and I have quickly learned that the south has THE BEST food and desserts ever!🙌🏻 Sweet tea, banana pudding, donuts, and the list goes on!🤤

I haven’t been eating 100% unhealthy but I would say at this point I’m at about 60% healthy foods and 40% unhealthy foods and my sweet spot is 80/20! So starting tomorrow, I’m going to start following a meal plan again. At this point I know how much I should be eating and what I should be eating but there’s just something about following a plan that keeps me grounded!💪🏻 I have been very consistent with my workouts and have noticed that working out actually helps a lot with my anxiety!🙌🏻

I want you to know that it’s OKAY to experience minor weight fluctuations so don’t freak out if you step on the scale and you’ve gained a couple pounds! This is bound to happen throughout the remainder of your life but know that you have the power to change your body and live a healthier life! I am in no way putting myself down for gaining a little bit of weight because I CHOSE to make those decisions that led me to this point and I am still at a very healthy weight for my size! BUT I haven’t been feeling as good lately because of my food choices so my goal isn’t necessarily to lose weight but just to make better choices and feel AMAZING!💓

Healthevoices conference 2018 💜

On the weekend I was lucky enough to attend the Jansen Healthevoices Conference. It was a privilege to spend a day listening to health advocates and being inspired by their journeys.

I loved being in a room with so many like-minded souls. The event has so much great energy and MC @shellyhorton1 was the driving force behind that. She was so positive and dynamic, as was the wonderful keynote speaker @ellehalliwell

I’ve added a few photos of @sarahkreece ’s beautiful artwork, her pieces illustrated her themes in a whimsical and emotive way. A highlight of the day for me!

It inspired me to further my own health advocacy adventure and it’s sparked some ideas for next year. Looking at you @_kaitb (thanks for coming as my date!)

I became a health advocate because the support I received from IG community during my UC days and then as an ostomate was so incredible, I wanted to be able to reach out and help one at least one other person too. There’s still a stigma about what the public think about ostomies, so I’m using my art to change that perspective. 🙌✏️

If you become sick, or get injured, you must have a health advocate - someone to be with you, to look out for your best interest. Illness psychologically weakens our ability to fight, and to be critical, no matter how strong or knowledgeable of a person we are. When we become ill, we naturally feel vulnerable: we are less able to ask questions, quick to undervalue ourselves in the presence of authority, more likely to go along with recommendations that we may not be comfortable with, quick to even blame ourselves for the illness. Choose a health advocate. A person to be your extra set of ears, who can help you think about and make the best decisions. Make a difference and be a health advocate. •
