If you follow us you know that we thought it would be fun to do some videos of what NOT to do at mealtimes😂 We had a few chuckles making them so we hope you do too!
This next one is called THE CAJOLER! Do you do this or know anyone who does?
If you pressure a child to eat a particular food it tends to have the opposite effect. Pressure can come in all forms- direct pressure i.e 'just have a little bit', persuasion and even saying things like 'mm this is delicious, just try some' is still pressuring the child to eat and often results in the child never wanting to try that particular food. Or they may scoff it down just to shut you up, without tasting and enjoying the food. And guilting your child into eating a particular food is a big NO NO and can set up a destructive path of emotional eating, which of course we want to avoid.
Imagine if you were treated like this at mealtimes. You might not feel so good when you are eating. Would you want to eat the carrot?
Nutrition isn't just about the nutrients, it's also about tasting and enjoying all sorts of foods and socialising at mealtimes. So lay off your little ones, stop pressuring them to eat their veggies and just keep exposing them to a variety of foods over and over. Don't talk about food or health at the dinner table- just chat about your day and put the enjoyment back into eating. And one day they just might eat that carrot!
