"No matter what circumstances you sisters experience, your influence can be marvelously far-reaching. I believe some of you have a tendency to underestimate your profound capacity for blessing the lives of others. More often than not, it is not on the stage with some public pronouncement but in your example of righteousness and the countless gentle acts of love and kindness done so willingly, so often on a one-to-one basis."
--James E. Faust, "You Are All Heaven Sent," Ensign, Nov. 2002, 110
Black Friday hit and I watched as my kids excitedly checked out the sales! As I asked around I noticed in wonder as they all were hunting for the perfect toy - to give to their sibling. Their excitement and focus was Christmas morning and the smile they hoped to give. As a mother in the home sometimes it can be difficult to remember that the work I am doing with my children is significant, it is vital, it is a selfless service. But it is more than that. Going through the motions isn't what is important. Anyone who has received a meaningful gift understands when they are a "checked box." My children need my focus, my energy, my prayers, my kindness, my thoughts, my planning, my smiles, my life-training, my patience, my hugs, my tears, and my all. Those services rarely earn promotions, awards, pay-increases, honors, and many times go completely unnoticed (even by me)! But those are the true gifts we give and give daily that bring us one step closer to being like the Master gift giver - Christ. His gifts were free and freely given! Interestingly, the place I learn this from the most is from those I am learning to serve - my kids. Children are so quick to give (from flowers they just picked to pictures they just drew, smiles, time, and ginormous hugs). Kids truly understand the reason for the season and have mastered the art of giving.
This December, I hope to spend less time in the store and give of myself more!
