During the holidays, I tend to reflect on the year by looking at snapshots of the past 12 months. The thing is, snapshots don't always show you the growth, shifts in mindset and small victories that came from deep within you, yet those #lifelessons are the milestones MOST worth celebrating.
Here are my first 3 personal realizations this year:
1) Giving myself guilt-free space for self-care was the most rewarding thing I did this year (and those closest to me understood and even applauded me for it). I have no regrets about the way I chose to schedule my year, pushing extremely hard with work but also carving out time for solo activities over social activities, such as writing, mindfulness and for being home, even if it meant seeming less flexible to others.
2) Treating life as an experiment helped me feel more actively involved in life's choices and less likely to feel blame or regret over outcomes. Experiments can be tentative and less daunting. I experimented a LOT this year with how I shifted the scales from being heavily focused on my scientific work to focused on my creative entrepreneurial work. I experimented with projects, with products, with possibilities. I told myself that I wouldn't know unless I really tried without holding back. So, I dove in. Of course, many things worked beautifully, some backfired. But what backfired was also a blessing.
3) This year, I drew lines and thought more carefully about balance. If I put in more than I got out of something - in terms of respect, energy, time and care - I pulled back. This was a struggle for me, and I am only NOW getting the hang of it in December, because I don't like changing myself due to others. I didn't want to care less, do less, be less than I feel naturally inclined to do. But, as the saying goes, we teach others how to treat us, and expectations can be toxic. Now, I am not afraid to set limits, because if I don't have my back, who will?
These are my 3 triumphs this year. Which one resonates with YOU? Tell me one of your own triumphs in a comment!
