Meditation is BORING 😴 !!! *
Spring, Easter and the thrill of a new beginning inspired this microblog - Sometimes its’ as simple as refreshing the outlook and learning to pay attention!! 💐
I’ve been practicing lately with less guidance — WOAH !! Old school or what? If you’ve been practicing for more than a few years you might remember the days when practicing independently, without an app or a device, was considered the “real thing”😉
During sitting mediation today I noticed how BORING it felt to JUST pay attention to my breath. After wrestling with my mind meandering to all the infinitely more delicious thoughts, I would keep trying to pay attention to the sensations of breathing 🙄
BUT only to notice a second later .. that I was lost in another WAY more amazing thought / plan / rumination.
Like..HELLO MIND!! Who’s in control here anyways?!!!? 🤯
A fantastic teacher and researcher @amishipjha uses the metaphor of attention being #hijacked. This has been SO helpful for me. My to do list, the email I have to send, the conversation I had yesterday, my plans to end global warming , the trip I have to pack for…. #hijack my attention. But how do we allow the hijackers to take over from the meditative object of focus in the first place?
@samharrisorg in his @wakingupcourse says that if we are truly paying attention then boredom does not arise. 💡
For me, strengthening the capacity to pay attention and not get hijacked…. translates into so many other aspects of life. Sitting meditation helps me be aware of this hijacking nature of mind. In the long run it actually prevents #boredom by keeping me true to my heart’s intentions, in spiritual practice and in daily life.
