President Trump, we’re glad you said you want to end HIV.
During the SOTU, President Trump pledged to eliminate HIV in the US by 2030. We know it’s possible because here in New York, we’re on track to end the HIV epidemic in New York by 2020 by getting new transmissions to a record low.
In a recent @NYDailyNews op-ed response, Amida Care CEO and President Doug Wirth invited Trump to follow @nygovcuomo’s example: support LGBTQ communities at risk of HIV.
From allowing health professionals to deny care to individuals based on sexual orientation, to dismantling the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, to proposing hundreds of millions of dollars of cuts to programs that target HIV/AIDS, President Trump’s actions don’t indicate a willingness to end the epidemic, despite his words at the State of the Union.
In contrast, New York is addressing barriers to health care like stigma and discrimination by advancing the rights of LGBTQ individuals, who are at higher risk of HIV/AIDS.
President Trump, to fight HIV, learn from New York and fight LGBTQ discrimination.
