Sierra, Children’s Therapist/Case Manager, Children’s Behavioral Health Services
-
I’ve been here for two years. This is my first job out of grad school. I originally applied for a different position at Hope Network, but during the interview process, they looked at my background and thought I’d be a perfect fit for children’s services.
-
We work with kids here. We provide therapy, case management, and have a med clinic for them. I help guide them through their life problems.
-
Sometimes we are the only positive in a kid’s life. Sometimes, they don’t have anyone. I love being that somebody.
-
We’re like a family here. The work environment is really low-key. We don’t want to be stressed because it’s not fair to pass that stress onto the kids.
-
People forget that problems can happen in childhood. If we don’t take care of things when kids are six, then they could snowball by the time they’re 18. We work to prevent that.
-
When people ask me, “Why do you work in Flint?” I tell them mental health goes where the problems are. There’s a lot going on in Flint and I want to help. I’m here for the kids.

Alicia, Physical Therapist, Neuro Rehab
-
I’ve been here for two years, it was my first job out of school. The neuro setting is what drew me here, I found my passion for it during my clinical rotations.
-
Hope Network Neuro Rehab is a therapy center for people recovering from brain or spinal injuries or other neurological diagnoses. We’re a collaborative team of physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as psychology, social work, and vocational counseling. I help people get back to living.
-
I can’t tell you the number of patients I’ve had who came in saying, “I’ll never walk again.” My goal is, “Let’s prove that wrong.”
-
You never work the same day twice in Neuro. The stuff that’s said and the things that happen would never happen anywhere else because it takes a pretty severe brain injury to relieve someone’s filter.
-
I had a patient who had been coming in and out of various therapy centers for years, and they all kept telling her, “There’s nothing wrong with you.” But when she got to us, we found her problem and were able to treat it within a couple of weeks. She came back to us in tears saying, “You gave me my life back.” Things like that are huge.
-
I push my patients really hard and don’t give up on them. I really try to think outside of the box when it comes to helping them get to that next level.
-
My work matters a lot. I take patients who are coming out of a coma, sometimes bed ridden, and I get them back to independence. Without my work, those patients would remain in bed.
-

The concert Tuesday night was AMAZING! I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that someone saw my post on facebook and decided that I should be given 2 tickets to the concert for free! I hear about people who are given random acts of kindness but it just seems unreal when it happens to you! I was also excited to introduce Nick to two of my favorite musicians! #randomactsofkindness #concerts #andygrammar #benrector #oneamazingconcert #hopenetwork #thankful

Matthew, Quality Manager, Hope Network Industries (HNI)
-
I’ve been here since 2011. I was going to school and having trouble finding a job. HNI gave me an opportunity. I was a production worker, a hi-lo driver, a materials coordinator, then a warehouse coordinator. Last May I finished my bachelor’s degree in engineering and was offered the Continuous Improvement Facilitator position, which I accepted. A few months after that I was offered the Quality Manager position.
-
At HNI, we’ll take bulk items such as food or consumer goods, and pack them for various uses. Working here is not just a job. You’re part of something bigger than just a job. Every day we help people. On my worst days, I go out on the floor and am reminded of why I still work here.
-
My goal ten years from now is to still be open and provide work to those people we haven’t met yet.
-
I come from manufacturing. I grew up on a farm. The hardest part of that is learning the soft skills. I needed them here. You have to be able to connect with people, and with 17 different languages spoken at HNI, that’s not always the easiest thing to do.
-
We have so many opportunities for advancement at HNI. If you want to learn and advance, the opportunities are here.

Maria, Generalist, Behavioral Health Services Clubhouse
-
I’ve worked here for three years. My interest in mental health is what led me to apply. Before Hope Network, I was a home health aide for more than 12 years. There was some mental health aspects in my last job, but it was much more physical. Here, it’s almost all mental health.
-
This is a day program for people with mental illnesses, our ultimate goal is getting them back into the workforce. I work alongside members, assisting them with cooking, cleaning, and financial affairs. I help them figure out problems they can’t handle themselves.
-
Patience is key here. There are always going to be hectic days, so I just take a deep breath and rein in the chaos.
-
I lost my dad two years ago, it was really sudden. The members were there for me. They would say, “I’m so sorry,” hug me, and if they saw I was down they would sit with me and be a companion. They made me feel like I mattered.
-
I’m essentially the main cook here. Everything is made from scratch. This is frybread. After I was done making chicken parmesan, I saw all of this extra flour coating and figured, “Why let it go to waste?” and made this. I’m afraid I may have cooked myself into a corner because the members might like it more than my garlic toast.

Jacob, Direct Support Education Advocate, Developmental Adolescent Residential Treatment (DART)
-
I’ve been here a little over three years. I graduated with a degree in Education but realized teaching wasn’t the direction I wanted to go. I moved around a little bit, stumbled across this job posting, and found a career path I didn’t see coming.
-
DART’s population is mostly kids with developmental disabilities. A lot of them are under state guardianship because their parents’ rights have been terminated. We provide tools to help them live independently.
-
I typically spend four days per week as a direct support professional, where I assist with things like hygiene, eating, or behavioral concerns. And one day per week I’m an education advocate, where I’m the liaison between the kids’ schools and DART.
-
Since I started here, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to grow professionally and use my skillset to tweak what my position looks like. You don’t get that everywhere.
-
It’s easy for people to go about their daily lives and not think about these kids because society has a way of sweeping them under the rug. Programs like ours are often their last chance.
-
This job has filled a void in me I didn’t know was there. It’s provided me with a feeling of giving back, and has rounded me out as a person.

Here I am vending at our first ever mushroom event - the Georgia Mushroom Festival! Allen and I were blessed to have great help from our charismatic friend Andrew (pictured). Allen gave a great public cultivation lecture, and we almost sold out of all our culinary spawn on the first day of the event. We learned so much today and cannot wait to get on the road for the upcoming Florida Mushroom Festival! Stay tuned for more updates and coming expansions from the mushroom life! 🍄 Visit us at www.fungifarmllc.com to order online or learn more about upcoming farm tours & classes. ✨

Alena, Director of Clinical Services, Behavioral Health Services
-
I’ve worked here for ten years. I came here right after I earned my master of social work. I knew I wanted to work in the mental health field so I started as a case manager. From there I became a clinical supervisor, and then a manager, and now a director.
-
Our team provides behavioral health services to individuals who have disabilities. I oversee the two programs we have here, case management and enhanced outpatient. After staff meetings, I’ll tell our team, “Go out there and save lives.” I feel like that’s what we do.
-
I love that we get to help people meet their goals. This is a vulnerable population and I think we’re really blessed to be able to serve them.
-
Hope Network has been good to me. I’ve been given a lot of opportunities to grow and pursue things that are important to me. I can’t imagine all organizations would be that supportive.
-
If you’re passionate about this field, do it. This job has given me a sense of purpose.

Mary, Registered Medical Assistant, Integrated Behavioral Health Services
-
I’ve been working here three years, and I just wanted something different. I used to work for multiple doctor’s offices and I wanted to see how the other side does behavioral health.
-
This program is a residential area for independent and dependent people, a lot of them elderly. We assist them with medication, showering, eating. I make sure they have their proper medications in a timely matter.
-
Our staff is like a family. From the top down, everybody here is considerate. To me, this isn’t a job - it’s more like, "I’m leaving my home to come to my second family."
-
I love my hours and I love my time off, but the clients are what I enjoy the most. We’re all they have.
-
One day, we were doing karaoke with the clients. This particular client was singing loud to The Commodores’ “Brick House.” Like, he gave it all he had. We just started laughing. He was dancing and screaming. I'll always remember that.
-
Medical assistants should take their time and know their Five Rights: right person, right med, right time, right dose, right route.

Tauheed, Program Line Manager, Children’s Behavioral Health Services
-
I’ve worked for Hope Network for 13 years. I was working as a behavioral health tech and a friend suggested I go into case management, so I applied. If you can do case management, you can do anything.
-
We provide case management and therapy services to children. I educate my staff to make sure they’re doing everything they can to meet the standards of Hope Network and the needs of our clients. We’re a tightknit family.
-
Our work matters here because of that one child. The one who leaves with a smile on their face, the one who is no longer on the street, the one who is mentally healthier than when they first came in.
-
We need more males in this field as it is primarily female-driven. A lot of the kids here come from broken homes and may not have positive male influences, and they need them.
-
Hope Network really allows you to move up in the company. I’ve had the opportunity to do so many different things here. When you work here, you’re going to be in an environment where you feel respected and wanted, and you don’t find that everywhere.

Sophia, Generalist, Behavioral Health Services Clubhouse

I’ve worked here for a year. I had graduated with my bachelor’s degree, was looking for jobs oline, and came across Hope Network. I applied and got a call the next day.
-
This program is a psycho-social rehabilitation clubhouse for adults with mental illnesses. We teach them skills that will help them become employed and more independent.
-
I do a lot. My job is all over the place. I do morning pickups, assist clients with their tasks, fill out progress reports. Sometimes I’m even in the kitchen. I guide our clients along their life journey.
-
A lot of our clients don’t have close friends or family, so I can be the person who’s there for them. We trust each other.
-
I love the work-life balance here. It’s nice to be able to clock out and not bring my work home with me.
-
When I first took this job, I never thought my relationships with our clients would be this strong. They teach me things. I came here to help others, and they help me.

Bri, Med Lead, Developmental & Community Services
-
I’ve been here for about two and a half years. I was working at an adult foster care home previously.
-
Our program is a goal-oriented, special needs home. We help people with their daily lives. A big part of what I do is taking care of our clients, but I also handle prescriptions, communicate with pharmacies and doctors, and schedule doctor appointments. I’m here to empower those who can’t do it for themselves.
-
I love what Hope Network stands for. I love everything they do for the community. I’ve never heard anything bad about this organization.
-
There’s a lot of character building here. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re taking care of somebody else. I hope to be better, and see more needs in people.
-
This job has helped me be a better person. I’ve become more compassionate and empathetic toward my loved ones. I’ve gone from, “Why are you being like this?” to, “I understand.”
-
To anyone considering this field: don’t give up. Sometimes people say, “I could never do what you do,” but once you get past that mind set, it’s so rewarding.
