The holidays are typically a time when many people go overboard with their eating and perhaps skip the gym more than they should, and consequently, their waistlines expand through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year.
It’s not uncommon for individuals to find themselves a good 10-20lbs heavier at the end of it all.
Let me be clear: the food is not necessarily the problem; your mindset is.
It’s never the ONE cookie or the ONE slice of pie that does you in. In fact, the ability to exercise portion control and stop after a moderate serving of any given food item is a skill (and not one that everyone has mastered). A lot of this stems from having an abundance mindset, which involves understanding that more of an indulgence doesn’t always make for a better experience, that you can always come back for more later if you really want it, that there’s always more where that came from.
Those with the all-or-nothing mentality struggle with being either completely “on” or “off” their diets. While their strict rules for eating may work well for them at times, it allows for no flexibility and no room for indiscretions. One cookie is no longer just the one cookie; it typically snowballs into 10 more cookies, then the rest of the pie, then chocolate… you get the picture. 😩 This mindset is highly associated with feelings of guilt, neurosis, food obsession, and it’s also associated with higher BMI as well as more disordered eating behaviors.
There’s no need to demonize any single food item ever. You should be allow to enjoy some desserts and treats guilt-free. You can absolutely incorporate them as part of an overall well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet and not derail your goals.
Rather than throwing all caution to the wind, commit to giving yourself permission to indulge in moderation, continue training hard, and don’t sweat the small stuff! Credit @soheefit .
