Flash back to our move! Four drivers. One toddler. Two cats. A fully loaded 26 foot truck. Towing a car. Driving another car behind. It was almost a 36 hour drive! We left on a Friday afternoon and didn't make it to our new destination until sunday morning. My advice for anyone making a cross country move:
1.) Budget! Moving is one of the most financially drianing expenses we have ever done as a family! Calculate truck rentals, gas, food, tolls. Find detours around huge tolls.
2.) Have a yardsale (or four) and sell as much as you can! Not only will it prevent you from paying for a storage unit (like we do,) but it'll give you emergency funds if you need them to survive without employment for a few weeks!
3.) Pack snacks! Especially for a toddler. Eating on the road is pretty much unavoidable, the snacks helped keep me awake, and kept my daughters mouth and belly entertained the majority of our trip. Bananas, drinkable yogurt, apple slices, the ocasional sweet treat (especially for momma.)
4.) Stop and make sure you stretch and run your child to the ground!
5.) Electronics are your friend whether it be keeping a two year old amused, or blasting music to keep you awake!
6.) Stop and pull over to rest as you need to. We thought 4 drivers would be a perfect number to drive straight through without stopping... 36 hours determined that was a lie! It feels like we stopped every 8 hours to take naps. Everyone was exhausted!Hotels are overrated. Save money and pull into a rest stop. Check in and out whenever you want, and its free!
7.) You're gonna be stressed no matter what. Make it to your destination and take a day to relax before you have to worry about unloading and unpacking.
If I could do it all over again... I wouldn't!
