“A mother’s love”
Michael is Merly’s third child. After his birth, Merly’s husband abruptly left, overwhelmed by his responsibilities and financial insecurity. He just walked away one morning and never came back again. Despite this tragic event, Merly’s life hasn’t changed, she keeps selling cigarettes in the street with a great smile as if nothing had ever happened... As a 39 year old single mum, Merly faces issues in her daily life that most of us don’t have to worry about. A simple thing like protecting her family from high temperatures has become a real struggle. For now, Merly uses a hammock to rock Michael and the gentle movement creates a soft breeze which somehow cools down the heat. A fan would certainly be much easier but unfortunately Merly doesn’t have access to electricity... Unlike her husband, Merly has never thought about walking away and abandoning her children. They are the most precious thing she has in life and are the reason why she wakes up in the morning. Despite all of the difficulties she faces, Merly will keep on fighting. Every day...
Technically speaking, this photo was the hardest I have ever taken so far. Michael was swinging in the hammock and I just couldn’t use auto focus like I normally do, I had to choose the manual mode. The lighting was also very dark so I decided to use the flash which limited my shutter speed to 1/200sec. Because of the movement, I was aware that 1/200sec was too slow to capture Michael sharply. I waited for him to reach the top of the swing arc, the moment when he was at his slowest speed, and I adjusted my focus point on this position. Once my settings were ready, I waited one more swing and pressed the shutter.
