One of the best things about a traditional city is that it can withstand and relish in idiosyncratic exuberance. No, -I- wouldn’t paint my house this purple, but someone clearly would. I don’t particularly love it, but it’s well-enough done and clearly is loved by its creator. A purple house in an a sea of HOA-mandated sameness would be too much, too far. It would stick out so sorely that even the royals among us would wince. But set in a neighborhood of polyglot styles, with a mean determined by so many points along the spectrum, a clear outlier can shine without blinding.
