MOTHERHOOD Double tap if this video makes you smile and if during your pregnancy you read all the books and decided the kids would only eat whole nourishing foods. Then it’s hot, their cranky and....ice cream! . Child nutrition is a big subject and maybe some of you will disagree with my approach...but I’m going to feel brave in the hope this makes at least one mom feel less bad
After TJ was born I exclusively breastfeed him for 6 months and then I started to introduce some solids. I bought my baby food recipe books, planned his meals, purchased all organic foods and stood in the kitchen chopping, cooking and blending.
BUT, every single meal I cooked got rejected....EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL. All the foods I had lovingly prepared he would not eat. He would literally spit them out. I tried different recipes....nope!
Then one day I was out longer than expected and so I bought a jar of baby food. TJ ate the whole jar. THE WHOLE JAR! . Maybe a one off I thought. Nope. He rejected all the homemade meals and ate any jar I offered. . I tried mixing it up. The jar bit won every time!
I was so upset! I wanted to be that mom that makes her baby all his food. A domestic goddess! I wanted him to eat all unprocessed foods. It bothered me for a long time...mom guilt, blaming myself....then I realised the important thing was that TJ was eating, he was growing, he was healthy, happy and loved. The drs were very happy with his progress.
Now I make sure my kids eat fruit and veggies everyday. They have a range of foods. They are allowed some treats like ice cream and cookies, but I try to encourage balance and moderation. Without labelling food good and bad we talk about how whole foods make us healthy. How our protein helps us to grow muscles and makes us strong. How carbs give us energy to keep playing!
Don’t beat yourself up moms. Sometimes ice cream is the answer and as long they have a balanced diet with lots of good minerals and vitamins they will be ok. This video was at the zoo. It was SO hot (look at their sweaty faces) and there was only a few ice cream options!
