I feel like the original 1996 Independence Day needs to go back to theaters for another wide-release run. The timing could not be better. The dialogue even captures the current moment. We go to the movies to feel things we can’t always express in our daily regimented lives. We also go to see other people get through situations we haven’t been in because the universal human spirit is there to identify with. And movies with a moral are comforts to us because we grew up hearing fairytales and stories that have morals. Effectively the movies show us what’s acceptable behavior and what’s unaccepted and let’s us decide for ourselves what behavior to adopt or denounce. In times like the digital age aka the age of information, we are more divided then we have been since #jimcrow or even the #civilwar we have #race at the center of #American issues because our country was build on it. And the information about it is legally omitted from high school curriculum. So we have a war on information right out the gate. Then to compound it we have false information circulating online with no police. We have loss of innocence. Loss of morals. We have moral apathy spreading faster than cancer. We have #terrorists killing people in mosques. We have domestic terrorists killing children in schools. We have foreign terrorists invading our government and foreign alien invaders attacking our #democracy . What makes our country end is all this division. What makes our country survive is us coming together! So when the president speaks in this film he says “ We can’t be consumed by our petty differences. We will be united in our common interest.” He had no idea the bigger threat in real life wouldn’t be space aliens. The real threat is social media algorithms. They brainwash us to think we have no common interests and should make an enemy out of people just for liking different things. It just makes everyone an extremist. We need to sit down together, look at the same thing and eat some fucking popcorn. As Americans I think we forgot how to do that. We need a moral to remind us. #independenceday is the perfect film to do it. #Art imitates life. Then life imitates art.
