So goes the tagline of @chingkalingcreatives.
Meet Mama Chingkaling Carolyn Kay Mante: Craft Artist, Eco-Warrior, and Digital Content Manager, Single Mother to Two Daughters (a.k.a. Baby Chingkalings), Dreamcatcher Weaver, Magical Accessories and Trinkets Maker at Craft Story.
As a 7-year-old, Carolyn was already fascinated with arts and crafts. She enthusiastically listened to her art teachers and submitted her art projects. She saved her allowance to buy art supplies. Now a single mother, she continues to immerse herself and her daughters in creativity:
“When Alanis, my eldest daughter, was born, we explored our creativity together by making dreamcatchers,” she shares. “Initially, it was a form of art therapy to address her nightmares. It eventually grew into the business it is now.”
Dreamcatchers lie at the heart of Chingkaling Creatives. And much heart goes making each one:
“I start by understanding the personality of the dreamcatcher I am about to make. It helps me visualize the look—the colors, weave pattern, and other details. I can’t really call it a process. The ideas just flow, and before I know it, a dreamcatcher is born,” Carolyn explains.
She also uses creativity to support her passion for environmental causes.
For the Save Lake Janagdan Movement, she made a dreamcatcher she considers one of her most important works. Lake Janagdan, a major lake in Ormoc City, is part of the Anoang-Lobi Range, a local Key Biodiversity Area.
“Along with the Ormoc Mountaineering Society and other concerned individuals and groups, we were able to stop the logging of hundreds of trees, by organizing an online petition and holding a night of protest through art and music,” Carolyn shares.
As Carolyn’s business grows, she gets closer to achieving her short-term dream, to join the annual National Arts and Crafts Fair held in Manila, where hundreds of local crafters display and sell their works, and her long-term dream, to grow Chingkaling Creatives, so she can provide single mothers like herself a livelihood rooted in arts and crafts.
